Chapter 121 We Should Have No Secrets
Caroline silently shed tears, too afraid to cry out loud.
She had never been entitled to such a release.
“I… I fell accidentally,” she said softly. “Mom, it’s nothing serious. Don’t worry about me.”
Finished
Harper patted her shoulder, offering comfort. “I was so worried, I rushed over without a second thought. David’s a man–he’s careless, doesn’t know how to take care of anyone, let alone show tenderness. If anything’s wrong, just tell me, okay? We’re family.”
Harper truly cared for Caroline, treating her as one of her own. Her tone remained gentle as she made arrangements to have a doctor see her immediately, ensuring everything was handled meticulously.
She didn’t forget to remind the doctor, “Be gentle. Try not to hurt her. Use the best imported medicine, whatever it costs.”
“Yes, Ms. Harper.”
In the hospital room, Harper stayed by Caroline’s side the entire time.
Outside the room, David stood with an incredibly dark expression. He slammed a fist hard against the wall.
Damn it! At such a critical moment, Caroline managed to escape unscathed yet again!
She was taking advantage of Harper’s kindness and the life debt owed to her, acting with impunity. Even he had no way to deal with her.
“Mr. Ellison…”
Before the bodyguard could finish speaking, he felt a sharp pain in his knee as David delivered a heavy kick.
“Useless!” David growled, venting his frustration.
The bodyguard immediately knelt down, begging for mercy. His head was lowered, his fear palpable, and he didn’t dare make a sound.
“How incompetent are you? Huh?” David roared. “You can’t even handle a woman! Delays, hesitation— you’ve wasted time!”
If the bodyguard had been quicker and more ruthless, Caroline would have already been wheeled into the operating room before Harper arrived.
Those two brats wouldn’t have lived to see the morning sun! But now? Touching Caroline again wouldn’t be so easy.
Not only did Harper shield her, but she also provided unwavering support. On top of that, Caroline’s pregnancy was already a scandal. For a prestigious family like the Ellisons, it was a disgrace, a blot on their name, and an affront to David’s reputation.
This matter had to be handled discreetly. It couldn’t be made public. If word got out, David would become the laughingstock of the entire city. No one would dare to mock him openly, but behind closed doors, the ridicule would be endless.
David cast a glance toward the hospital room. Harper sat by the bed, talking about something, and Caroline

It looked like a harmonious scene between a mother–in–law and daughter–in–law.
The sight made David’s anger burn even hotter. At that moment, the horizon began to brighten.
The sun was about to rise, heralding a new day.
Finished
After a night of turmoil, Caroline’s nerves were stretched thin. Completely drained, she fell asleep without realizing it.
Harper gently pulled the blanket over her, then quietly left the room, carefully closing the door behind her.
“David,” she said as she approached her son, “there’s something I need to discuss with you.”
David pressed his thin lips together tightly.
Harper let out a long sigh before speaking. “I can tell you’re not satisfied with Caroline. This marriage tied you two together unexpectedly, and I know you resent it. Tell me, do you have someone you care about?”
Someone I care about? Feelings? They were nothing more than a distraction.
David, cold and unfeeling, had never understood what love was. In his world, only ambition and achievement mattered.
“If you do, just tell me. We should have no secrets between us,” Harper pressed on. “I want the truth.”
