David was a man of his word.

For Caroline to humiliate him by putting such a heavy burden of betrayal on his shoulders was the greatest disgrace he had ever endured. He had always stood above others, with countless people bowing to him. When had I ever suffered such humiliation?
Caroline forced a smile, tugging at the corners of her mouth. “Well then, I’ll take my own life before you can make your move.”
The car fell silent, so quiet she could hear her own shallow breathing.
“If I die… David, how will you explain it to Ms. Harper? She’ll grieve for me. Do you really want to see her, at her age, bury her child? And when Ms. Harper arrived earlier, you could have told her I was carrying another man’s child. Why didn’t you? Why did you keep quiet? Why didn’t you reveal the truth?”
He shot her a sideways glance, his eyes brimming with murderous intent. “You think it’s something to brag about, that my humiliation shines like a beacon? Should I announce it to everyone I meet?”
The fewer people who knew, the better.
More importantly, he didn’t want Harper, in her twilight years, dragged into such a sordid scandal.
David’s plan had been simple. Deal with the child swiftly, then settle the score with Caroline.
But Harper’s unexpected arrival had completely disrupted his intentions.
Caroline took a deep breath and laid her cards on the table. “David, let’s not beat around the bush. You’re a smart man; you know the truth of the matter. Even if you tell Ms. Harper that I’m carrying another man’s child, you can’t touch my baby because Ms. Harper won’t let you. You’re well aware that I saved Ms. Harper’s life. We grew up together in the orphanage, and we share a deep bond. If I beg her to protect my child, she’ll relent. Besides, I’m willing to divorce you and leave with nothing. Ms. Harper is a kind woman and a devout Buddhist. She won’t casually take two lives. So, David, whether or not you reveal the truth to Ms. Harper, I’m confident I can protect my child.”
In truth, Caroline wished David would tell Harper the truth.
If he did, she could escape this monster, keep her baby safe, and no longer live in constant fear. But David had chosen silence.
He wanted to handle everything privately, to avoid tarnishing his reputation. He wanted all his hatred and anger to fall squarely on her, forcing her to bear the consequences alone.
So, since he refused to expose the truth, Caroline wouldn’t drag Harper into this either.
She still–wanted to be the pure, kind Caroline in Harper’s eyes.
“Good, very good,” David sneered coldly. “So now you’re using my mother to threaten me?”
Caroline forced herself to stay calm. “You’ve driven me to this point.”
She was negotiating with David. Her chances of success were slim–so slim–but she had to try.

to live. I don’t mind to suffer, but how could I allow my unborn child to endure such cruelty?
To have to beg just for the right to live, with no guarantee of success–it was heartbreaking.

“Then let’s wait and see,” David said, stepping out of the car. “Whether you can use your little schemes to protect your bastard, or whether I’ll succeed in getting rid of it.”
