David’s tone was brimming with confidence. Caroline is just one woman—how hard could it be to deal with her? It is only a matter of waiting for the right opportunity. There is still plenty of time. I would never allow that illegitimate child to come into the world. If it did, what kind of man would I become?
As long as the baby wasn’t born, David could act without hesitation.
A man playing daddy to someone else’s child? What a joke!
Caroline followed him out of the car. Though David didn’t lay a finger on her, his words were far more terrifying than if he had wrapped his hands around her throat.
What could I do?
“David” Suddenly, Caroline called his name.
He didn’t stop walking, continuing forward without even glancing at her, treating her as if she didn’t exist.
“David,” she called again, her voice louder this time. “I’ve thought it over—I really can’t fight you. Being able to live one more day with this child is just that… one more day.”
Her voice carried a deep, sorrowful resignation.
It was early morning, with the sun rising brightly and everything around her bursting with life. Yet she radiated an overwhelming sense of desolation.
David turned around, just in time to see tears streaming down Caroline’s face.
She wasn’t sobbing; she simply stared at him, but her tears fell like heavy raindrops, relentless and uncontrollable.
David despised women’s tears, and Caroline’s tears irritated him the most.
“You dare to cry?” he sneered, raising an eyebrow. “Save your tears for when the bastard is gone. It’s too early for that now!”
“I won’t need you to do anything,” Caroline said quietly.
David’s expression shifted slightly. “What do you mean?”
“I’ll do it myself,” she said. “After all… it’s my fault. I’m useless, incapable. I’m just an orphan. Whether I live or die, no one–aside from Ms. Harper–will care.”
David narrowed his eyes, suspicious of what game she was playing now.
When it came to Caroline, he felt nothing but disdain and fury.
She was as cunning as a fox, repeatedly deceiving him and pulling every dirty trick she could think of.
And yet, he hated her to the core, but every time his hands were around her throat, and she gasped for air, a faint reluctance stirred in his chest.
What is there to be reluctant about? She is nothing but a wretched life!

The morning sun bathed her in its golden light, giving her an almost ethereal glow. Yet, she seemed trapped in a cold, dark hell.
“Let’s end this. I’m so tired…” She closed her eyes briefly. “I’ve never done anything wrong in my life, but I’ve suffered so much. Why? Is it just because I’m an orphan? Because I have no parents?”
As she spoke, her voice grew softer and more distant, like a whisper carried on the wind.
Before David could grasp what she was planning, Caroline suddenly turned and sprinted toward the nearby rockery with unprecedented speed.
Her skirt billowed in a high arc as she ran. Her steps were swift and resolute, showing no hesitation or pause. Her expression was filled with determination.
By the time David realized she was trying to end her own life, it was too late.
Caroline was already just a meter away from the rockery.
David, still standing by the steps, knew that even if he rushed over now, he wouldn’t make it in time.
The Ellison residence was renowned for its opulence. Every decoration was worth millions, and the estate itself was built with careful attention to the location. The sprawling property backed against a mountain, with a rockery and flowing water installed in the courtyard.
