The moment Caroline began retching, David let go without hesitation. Caroline wasn’t worth his care, nor did she deserve his patience.
David pondered. This woman isn’t worthy. Everything she endured, she brought upon herself.
If she had behaved properly as Mrs. Ellison–if she hadn’t gotten pregnant, if she hadn’t betrayed him–he might still have been willing to pick food for her and remind her to eat, just like before.
But no, David felt nothing but endless indifference and cruelty.
“Are you done throwing up?” he asked coldly, standing tall with his usual elegance. His hand was casually tucked into the pocket of his tailored pants. “Still planning to kill yourself?”
Caroline slowly raised her head to look at him. Her eyes brimmed with tears, glistening under the light, but her expression remained defiant.
On her pale face was a faint, mocking smile.
“You’re the one driving me to my death…” she said softly. “If I had died just now, your precious Ellison residence would have been tainted. A life lost, no, three lives gone. Would you be able to sleep at night? Aren’t you afraid I’d come back as a vengeful spirit, bringing my children to haunt you?”
David replied indifferently, “If it’s tainted, so be it. I’ll just get another villa.”
He had plenty of properties. Worst case, he’d demolish this one and build a new one, or simply buy more land. It didn’t matter to him.
Caroline felt as though her heart was being torn in two, the pain numbing her to the core.
“Of course,” she murmured bitterly. “To you, my life means nothing… I couldn’t fight you while alive, so what could I possibly do to you in death?”
She wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes and glanced at the rockery. There, a bodyguard stood clutching his chest and stomach, his face twisted in pain.
It turned out that when she had rushed toward the rockery, the bodyguard had leapt forward from the shadows, shielding the rockery with his body. She had collided with him, not the rockery.
The impact had left her reeling, but the bodyguard must have suffered even more–likely sustaining internal injuries.
Caroline felt a pang of guilt. She hadn’t intended to involve anyone innocent.
David took a step closer, frowning as he crouched to meet her gaze.
“Listen carefully, Caroline. Even if you want to die, you’ll need my permission first!”
His tone was sharp and ruthless, devoid of the gentleness he once showed her.
Gentleness? David had never truly been gentle to me.
Caroline met his gaze calmly, showing no fear. After all… she had already thoroughly angered him. What else
do I have to lose?

“If you harm my child, I’ll kill myself,” Caroline said firmly. “Let’s see who succeeds first–you in taking my child’s life, or me in ending my own.”
She was using her life to threaten him, to bargain with him. Caroline knew full well that David didn’t care about her life.
What he cared about was his accountability to Harper, the scandal of the Ellison family’s eldest daughter- in–law dying suddenly, and the potential impact on Ellison Group’s stock and his own reputation.
If pushed far enough, Caroline would expose her unwed pregnancy to the public. David would become the laughingstock of the entire city. I am not afraid of death. What else could I possibly fear?
David’s chest heaved with rage. No one had ever dared speak to him like this–dared defy him in this way!
“Caroline!”
His voice thundered as he raised his hand high. She didn’t flinch, didn’t move, merely watched him, waiting for the slap to land.
Go ahead. She thought. She knew he had wanted to do this for a long time.
Gripping her throat, squeezing her jaw–none of it could extinguish the fury burning within him.
