Chapter 128 I Don’t Hit Women
A slap–just one. For him, it was nothing.
Caroline even lifted her chin slightly, signaling him to go ahead.
“You think I won’t hit you?” David’s hand trembled faintly.
Caroline assumed it was from sheer rage, certainly not hesitation. How could he possibly hesitate?
“I know you will,” Caroline said calmly. “Go ahead, do it. Hit me.”
Yet David’s hand remained raised, frozen in midair.
Caroline’s voice rose, sharp and clear. “Hit me! David!”

Her piercing shout echoed across the garden. David was consumed with hatred for this woman. His hand swung down fiercely, stirring the air around it.
Caroline instinctively closed her eyes. It was a natural reaction, entirely beyond her control.
But the sharp slap she expected never came. When she opened her eyes, she saw David’s fist land hard on the ground next to her, cracking the tiles beneath it.
“Caroline, let me tell you something–I don’t hit women,” David said coldly. “Consider yourself lucky.”
Without another word, he stood up abruptly and strode past her.
Caroline’s hands were still pressed against the ground. Whether by oversight or intent, David’s polished -leather shoe stepped squarely on her injured hand–the one with five fractured fingers.
The pain was excruciating, stabbing through her like a knife.
But even that searing physical pain couldn’t compare to the deep, desolate ache in her heart. Caroline sat there on the steps, dazed and disoriented, her mind drifting.
Not long after, David returned.
He had changed into a fresh suit, his shoes shining spotless, his face cold and imperious. He didn’t spare Caroline a single glance, as if she were nothing more than thin air.
David got into the car and left for the Ellison Group.
Caroline remained sitting where she was, lost in a trance. Last night had been a stormy downpour, but today the sun blazed bright in a cloudless sky.
“Madam…” Paul approached cautiously. “Are you all right?”
She tugged the corners of her mouth into a feeble smile. Her state was obvious–anyone could see she wasn’t all right.
Yet not a single person stepped forward to help her. Even Paul kept his distance.
She didn’t need to guess; she knew David had ordered them not to assist her. The fact that Paul even asked after her was already a sign of kindness.

Caroline nodded faintly, then slowly stood on her own, making her way back into the Ellison residence, up the stairs, and into her bedroom.
As if nothing had happened, she calmly went about her routine. Using her uninjured hand, she ran a bath, undressed, and soaked herself in the tub.
Afterward, she headed to the kitchen, found some instant food in the fridge, and ate enough to fill her stomach. Not once did she shed another tear.
At the Ellison Group’s office, another senior executive left David’s office, his face ashen after being thoroughly berated.
The atmosphere in the company was tense; everyone was on edge. Mr. Ellison… it was as if he’d swallowed dynamite today!
“William!” David’s furious voice roared from the office. “Get the marketing department in here now!”
“Yes, Mr. Ellison.”
Now it was the marketing team’s turn to suffer.
William’s expression was grim. Everyone knew David had a temper, but rarely had they seen him this explosively angry.
Inside the office, David stood by his desk, hands on his hips. Several buttons of his shirt were undone, and the room was a mess–papers and files scattered across the floor.
He pulled out a cigarette pack and reached for his lighter, only to toss both aside in frustration. He couldn’t calm himself, no matter how hard he tried. But it definitely isn’t because of Caroline. Absolutely not!
