Jack took a pen and started writing on a piece of scrap paper while explaining the problems. Alice was stunned, looking at the man in front of her, her feelings suddenly becoming complicated. Because of Chloe, she had few friends and teachers disliked her. No one had ever helped her with her studies.
Jack’s tone was flat but sharp.“With your attention span, you probably daydream in class!” Alice quickly snapped back to reality, whispering, “I’m sorry.
I’ll pay
attention.”
Jack, seeing her submissive attitude, felt his throat tighten, and he continued explaining patiently. In the evening, warm light enveloped the two of them. Alice sat while he stood beside her, propping himself on the table, ca
calculating the problem–solving process. “Do you think in a straight line? This problem uses the same method as the last one.”
“This is a simple trick. Can’t you see it? Are your eyes just for show?”
“Have you ever tested your IQ? Are you below standard? Do it again!”
His tone was flat, but when he scolded, it hit hard. Luckily, Alice already knew he was the sharp–tongued school doctor; otherwise, she would have lost it by now.
In the end, Alice managed to hold on. She packed up her completed homework:“Thank you, Dr. Wilson. You’re amazing. You still remember all this.”
Jack twirled his pen, his gaze appraising.“Doesn’t your family hire a tutor?”
Alice pursed her lips.“I don’t want to owe them anything. Tutors are expensive. I have no money and don’t want to ask the Welch family for help.”
Jack looked at her fair profile, her lowered eyelids hiding her emotions.
Alice cautiously asked,“Dr. Wilson, can I ask you for help if I don’t understand something?”
He turned, his tone unnatural.“I’m busy.”
After being rejected, Alice didn’t get angry; she obediently packed her bag.
Jack tapped the desk, adding, “It depends on my mood.”
Alice smiled.“Thank you, Dr. Wilson… no, thank you, teacher!” She said that and didn’t wait for his reaction, grabbing her bag and running off.
Jack squinted, a lazy smile creeping onto his face; well, he might as well consider it a way to pass the time.
When Alice got home, it was already dark. The butler approached: “Mr. Welch and Miss Black are out for dinner.”
“Okay.”
Alice went to the dining room alone, enjoying a rare moment of peace. She checked her phone and saw Chloe’s post:“Having a feast with the brothers!” The photo showed them laughing.
Alice glanced at it and then closed the app, continuing to eat.
The next day, Alice got up and went to the dining room for breakfast. Her brothers weren’t there yet, only Chloe. Chloe smugly boasted, “I made a lot of progress at training yesterday.”

Alice sat down, expressionless, eating her food without acknowledging Chloe. Chloe was in a good mood and didn’t mind Alice’s cold attitude. Despite Alice’s calm exterior, she was definitely fuming inside!
Alice finished her breakfast in a few bites and walked out directly. But the driver stood by, unmoving:“Miss Black isn’t ready yet. We need to wait for her.”
After ten minutes, Chloe still hadn’t appeared. Alice said impatiently, “We’ll be late!” She was growing increasingly intolerant of the Welch family.
Alice decided not to wait any longer, opened the car door to leave, and ran into her fourth brother, Caleb, “What difference does it make if you wait a little longer for Chloe? Her father saved your life. He didn’t abandon you. And now can’t you even wait for Chloe?” Alice’s hand gripped the door handle tightly.
