Chapter 6
Being woken up in the middle of the night only added fuel to the fire.
Wrapped in a coat, she stepped out of the dorm and snapped, “You disgusting piece of trash, can you not act like a lunatic? Laura left a long time ago. Stop howling.”
“Where is she?” James demanded.
Emily sneered. “Aren’t you her boyfriend? If even you don’t know, why the hell would I?”
“I…”
“You what? Let me guess–you just crawled out of Lily’s bed?”
James was left speechless.
Emily had never forgiven him for how much he had hurt me. Now that she had him cornered, she wasn’t about to stop.
“I told Laura from the start you weren’t worth it, but she refused to believe me. She insisted on being with
you.”
“Do you even realize how many guys at school were chasing after her? She chose you. You didn’t choose
her.”
“She had so many chances to leave you and live a better life, but she stayed.”
“Thankfully, you were scummy enough to finally wake her up.”
Every word hit James like a whip.
For the first time, he realized–I was never meant to be his ornament.
Nor was I some mindless plaything, lying beside him in bed, stripped of my self–worth.
The only reason I had once humbled myself so much was because I loved him.
Yes, I had compromised for him. I had given in to him time and time again.
But I had never lost myself.
I had loved him, but that love had its limits. I could be indulgent, I could be self–effacing–but I would never erase myself for him.

And now, for the first time, James saw the version of me he had been blind to all along–brilliant, proud,
untouchable.
But it was too late.
Memories of our past flashed through his mind in fragments, each one stabbing at his heart.
I was gone. No one at school knew where I had gone.
And between us, there was only the past.
On the way back, James sent me countless messages.
Some were desperate pleas, some were domineering demands.
But my schedule was packed with work and studies. Most of his messages sank into oblivion, and the few that made it to my screen were promptly ignored.
James was drowning in regret, losing himself in an endless haze. His attention on Lily started to wane,
and that terrified her.
She knew he was slipping away.
So, she began trying every possible way to make her presence known.
One night, just as James arrived home, his phone rang.
On the other end, a soft sob echoed through the receiver, sending a sharp jolt through his nerves.
“James… help me…”
His grip on the phone tightened.
“What’s wrong, Lily? What happened?”
Lily hesitated for a moment before her voice trembled with fear.
“I’m in the alley behind the school… There’s a drunk man blocking the exit… I–I’m so scared…”
Without a second thought, James grabbed his coat and dashed out the door, running every red light on his way to her location.
But when he arrived, all he saw was Lily standing under the dim glow of the streetlamp, her outfit pristine, her makeup flawless–like a porcelain doll.
“Where is he? Are you-”

Before he could finish, Lily’s eyes turned red, and she lunged into his arms.
“James… you’re finally here..”
A faint fragrance wafted from her, but instead of being moved, his gaze darkened.
At that moment, an image flashed through his mind–our first meeting.
Back then, I was covered in bruises, cornered against a wall, my hands clutching a broken shard of a vase, ready to fight my way out.
He had seen what real danger looked like.
That was why, at this moment, he couldn’t believe Lily.
His brows furrowed with disgust as he pushed her away.
She had been crying, but somehow, her makeup was still untouched.
How pathetic.
For the longest time, he had thought I was nothing more than an obedient plaything, too well–trained, too
submissive.
He had assumed Lily was like the version of me he first met.
But she wasn’t.
From beginning to end, the only person I had ever humbled myself for was the one I loved.
James finally understood–he never loved fragile, pretentious women.
He loved strength. He loved resilience.
He loved me.
His gaze swept over Lily one last time, and in that instant, he shifted all the blame for losing me onto her.
He sneered.
“Enough. Your acting is terrible.”
