Chapter 4
Silence stretched across the phone line.
Finally, Issac’s bitter laugh cut through. “Lucas, is she having you play along with her theatrics?
Lucas wanted to reach through the phone and strangle him. “Evelyn is-”
A weak hand suddenly gripped his arm.
Looking down, he saw Evelyn had regained consciousness.
She shook her head painfully, mouthing the words: “Don’t. Make. Him. Come.”
Miraculously, the heart monitor showed her vitals slowly strengthening
“What’s happened to her?” Issac’s voice had grown hoarse.
But Lucas was already hanging up, rushing to get the attending physician as her vitals continued to improve.
After another examination, the doctor removed his mask, wiping sweat from his brow. “Her vitals are stabilizing. Get her to intensive care, now!”
Meanwhile, Issac stared at his phone long after Lucas hung up.
Summer noticed his distraction and hatred flashed in her eyes.
“Issac, they’re obviously trying to manipulate you. Evelyn’s been playing these games for years. Haven’t you had enough?”
She reached for his hand, but he stood abruptly.
“I have work to finish. You should head home.”
Summer had hoped to stay the night. She left, seething with anger.
In his study, Issac couldn’t focus on his laptop screen, his thoughts scattered.
Finally, he called his other assistant.

“Find out where Evelyn is.” His voice betrayed a slight tremor.
“Yes, sir.”
Fifteen minutes later, the assistant called back.
“Sir, Ms. Spencer was in a car accident several hours ago. She’s at St. Mary’s Hospital but is now stable.”
Issac gripped the phone in silence.
The assistant ventured hesitantly, “Would you… like to visit her?”
After a long pause, Issac only said, “Don’t let her know I asked.”
The assistant agreed, somewhat bewildered, before Issac ended the call.
He said nothing more, but the light in his study burned until dawn.
The next day at the hospital, Evelyn seemed slightly stronger.
Lucas stayed by her side, pleading: “Eve, you can’t delay any longer. You need to start chemotherapy immediately. You won’t last much longer without treatment!”
But Evelyn just smiled and shook her head. “That would be fine. I’ve been waiting for that day.”
Lucas froze.
His heart clenched as his voice shook, “Do you really need to punish yourself like this?”
“Death isn’t punishment for me, Lucas. Thank you for staying by my side all these years. If you truly care about me, please let me make my own choice. I’m begging you.”
Her soul had died five years ago.
Now her body would finally follow.
A few days later, despite Lucas’s protests, Evelyn insisted on leaving the hospital.
It was the anniversary of Sophia’s death.
Evelyn brought white lilies to the cemetery.
Standing before the headstone, she gazed at the black and white photograph of the beautiful young

woman.
So young, so beautiful, so kind – her life frozen on that terrible day.
“Sophia, you probably don’t want to see me.”
“I’ve dreamed of you every night these past years, apologizing in every dream.”
“I wish I could go back to that day. If I could, I would never run away.”
She sat beside the headstone, like they used to sit together sharing secrets.
“You know, I’ll be joining you soon. But I’m scared – scared you won’t want to see me, scared you hate me
too…”
Tears rolled down her cheeks as the cold wind whistled through the cemetery.
Touching Sophia’s photograph, Evelyn’s heart ached with indescribable pain.
“Whether you hate me or not, I’m coming to find you,” she whispered hoarsely. “We promised to be best
friends forever.”
