Chapter 12
I knew my time in Germany wouldn’t be long, but I hadn’t expected it to be this brief
David kept confirming “The timing is perfect now. We have contacts in the States, and most importantly, we’ve received FDA approval Who knows when the next opportunity will come?”
I nodded: “Then let’s return.*
David’s company was registered in New York, where we landed at JFK.
With our existing product foundation and major capital injection, everything progressed rapidly.
The faster we moved, the more people we needed.
I was overwhelmed with work, managing both technical issues and recruitment.
Then David told me the investor wanted a meeting
“He specifically asked to see you. Strange.”
I should have realized sooner. The investor David frequently mentioned six months ago was unusually agreeable, never questioning any company decisions.
I fidgeted with my pen cap, hesitating: “Could I skip this?”
David grimaced: “I could make excuses with anyone else, but not him.”
I hadn’t imagined how I would meet Alex Drake again.
As his friend had said, without deliberate orchestration, we were like opposite ends of a revolving door, destined never to cross paths.
“Emma, this is Mr. Drake.”
“Mr. Drake, this is Emma Walker, our technical lead. Her joining a year ago accelerated our progress significantly.”
The Alex before me bore no resemblance to his former self, as if that perfectly tailored suit had severed him from the past.
Still casual, still nonchalant, but completely different.
Now his casualness carried an untouchable air, keeping people at bay.
Chapter 12
Only his gaze remained the same – forceful and direct. I extended my hand with a polite smile. “Pleased to meet you, Mr. Drake. I’m Emma Walker.”
Alex kept his hands in his pockets, silent, his sharp gaze examining me.
Without pretense: “Mr. Matthews, I need a word with her.”
David opened his mouth, then quietly withdrew.
As he opened the door, he met two pairs of eyes. Harrison shooed him away.
Another curious voice asked: “What’s this about?”
Harrison responded concisely: “Since Alex couldn’t travel abroad, he found a way to bring her back.”
“Any chance?”
“None. Even if she were flayed alive, she wouldn’t pass Lady Catherine’s standards.”
“Before, his mother didn’t care, thought she was insignificant. Now she’s declared – unmarried is fine, but no unsuitable marriage.”
