“What I can tell you is that before your surgery, you and Celeste looked completely in love. You took care of her, protected her, as if she were the most precious thing in your life. And… there’s one more thing you should know.”
“What? There’s more?!” Peter asked, his voice cold but laced with concern.
“Yes… She’s pregnant. You’re going to be a father, Peter. Celeste is five months along. I don’t know all the details, but when you returned to Valeria, she was already almost four months pregnant.”
Peter’s eyes widened.
Just a moment ago, he had been convinced that woman wasn’t his type. And yet… here was the undeniable proof that something had happened between them. That, at some point, he had wanted her.
Because she was carrying his child.
“I’m… I’m going to be a father…” Peter whispered, his voice barely audible.
“Yeah… and the sooner you accept it, the less likely you are to say or do something stupid in front of her. Trust me, I don’t know her that well, but she’s been here, looking after you. She never gave up on the idea that you’d wake up, that you wouldn’t leave her alone. And here you are.”
“I know things feel out of your control, but you need to understand–23 years is a long time. Things change. Even your relationship with Maximus changed. From what I know, you two actually became… friends. And honestly, that still surprises me.”
“Oh, Marcus… What the hell am I supposed to do?” Peter groaned, running his hands through his hair.
“Why?”
“Why?! That woman is pregnant with my child! And I don’t even know what’s happening to me! And now you’re telling me I’m going to be a father and a husband to someone I don’t even remember, no matter how hard I try?”
“Peter, that’s the truth. Whether you like it or not, that’s something you have to figure out. Celeste is a good woman. I know she’s not Katherine, and she’s not the type of woman you were used to, but think about what I said -20 years is a long time. People change.”
“Out there“-Marcus pointed at the door-“Maximus, Celeste, and Alden are all waiting for you to recover so you can get back to your life.”
“Pff. ‘Life‘. What life? What the hell do I even call ‘normal‘ anymore? I don’t have a single damn memory! You’re telling me I made peace with Maximus, that I have a son who’s already married, a grandson, and two more on the way. And to top it all off, you’re saying I was about to marry a woman who, as far as I’m concerned, is a complete stranger!”
“Peter, I’m asking you to really think about what you say and do after this conversation. Don’t hurt people who don’t deserve your anger or your hatred, just because they’re not what you expected.”
“Marcus, what the hell am I supposed to do? Tell me! How the fuck am I supposed to accept that I’m a man in his forties?! That mentally, I’m basically crippled?!”
“Why even ask that? You take what’s yours, and you work to accept that this is your new life with the maturity you should have.”
