Elizabeth asked, “But, Mom, what happens when ten months pass and there’s no baby? What do I do then?”
Samantha scoffed. “That’s the easiest part. Say you had difficult labor, but the baby was stillborn. Or claim you suffered a miscarriage halfway through the pregnancy after an unfortunate fall. Or, find a baby elsewhere and pass it off as your own. Elizabeth, there are countless ways to handle this. What matters now is that you must fake this pregnancy.”
A brief silence settled over the room before Matthew gave a slow, deliberate nod.
Elizabeth squared her shoulders, determination hardening her features. “Alright. Let’s do it.”
Night descended over the Ellison residence.
In the dimly lit study, David sat at his desk, his gaze locked onto the computer screen where William’s face flickered, “Have you found out who drugged me?”
“Mr. Ellison, we’ve identified a suspect. It’s a waitress from the restaurant.”
“Where is she now?”
William hesitated. “She’s vanished.”
David’s expression darkened. “What?”
William explained, his voice steady. “I believe she was never a real employee. She infiltrated the restaurant with the purpose to drug you. There’s no record of her in their system, no employment history, nothing. Once her job was done, she disappeared without a trace. That makes tracking her incredibly difficult.”
David leaned back in his chair, the glow of the screen casting sharp shadows across his face.
“Mr. Ellison, this was likely someone’s attempt to set you up. Someone at that dinner wanted to send a woman to you, but before they could act, Ms. Elizabeth intervened and took you to a hotel room instead. That threw off their plan. If you want to get to the bottom of this, we’ll need to interrogate everyone who attended the dinner. Someone must know who was behind it.”
David’s jaw tensed.
Every guest at that gathering held status, such as CEOs politicians, influential figures. Dragging them in for questioning over something as sordid as drugging his drink seemed unnecessary.
It wasn’t about fear. It was about priorities.
Besides, he had spent the night with Caroline in the end. Their scheme had failed.
Caroline…
He recalled what she had said that Elizabeth might have been the one to drug him. She had appeared. almost instantly after the drug took effect. It was too concidental.

“… I haven’t looked into her yet, Mr. Ellison.” William straightened. ‘I’ll begin immediately and report back by tomorrow.”
David exhaled sharply..
Elizabeth wasn’t even worth a full–scale investigation.
He was already planning to confront the Brooks family. This would be one more thing to settle while he was there. Under enough pressure, he doubted Elizabeth would hold her tongue.
Just as he was about to issue his next command, the study door creaked open slightly.
Whoever stood outside neither entered nor left, just lingered.
There was only one person in the entire Ellison residence who would do something like that.
David’s gaze sharpened. “Caroline.” His voice was low, edged with irritation. “What do you want?”
Caroline stood at the doorway, her grip tightening around the tray in her hands, her knuckles white.
After dinner, Harper had specifically arranged for fresh seasonal fruit to be delivered from the Ellison mansion. Though she hadn’t come herself, she had called multiple times, reminding Caroline to make sure both she and David ate properly, to maintain their health.
Harper had even emphasized that Caroline should personally wash, slice, and serve the fruit to David in his study as he carried too many burdens, managing thousands of employees, running a business empire.
