Before Caroline could get up, David’s uninjured hand reached out, wrapped around her waist, and lifted her effortlessly.
The world spun.
By the time she regained her senses, she was already sitting on his lap.
“You- She was speechless. “David, you’re this badly injured, and you still have the energy for this?”
“This hand is fine.”
“Oh. great. Why didn’t that assassin go for both your hands instead of leaving one free to cause trouble?*
David leaned in slowly until their noses brushed.

She reached out and touched his forehead. “No fever. Then why are you acting so crazy? David, do you have depression or something? Did you suddenly feel like giving up in the middle of the night? And then, just as suddenly, change your mind and call me over?”
David smirked. “If I hadn’t done this, I would’ve lost my virginity by now.”
Caroline was completely lost.
Lost his virginity? Men could lose their virginity? What is he even talking about?
Her gaze instinctively drifted downward, eyeing that part of him. “You’ve probably been with more women than you can count, and now you wanna pretend to be all pure and innocent?”
David’s brows furrowed. “Who told you I’ve been with lot of women?”
“Isn’t it obvious?”
“It’s not!”
“Okay, fine,” Caroline muttered, rolling her eyes. “Forge I said anything.”
Not like it mattered to her how many women he had been with.
And yet…
Hearing him deny it so firmly sparked a tiny, inexplicable sense of satisfaction deep inside her. She wasn’t even sure why she felt that way.
What is there to be happy about? So what if David had fewer women in his past?

Caroline braced her hands against his chest, leaning back. “You need to stop. You’re injured, okay? How about getting some actual rest?”
But David kept closing the distance. His lips skimmed her check before settling just beside her ear.
“Listen to me, Caroline,” he said, his Adam’s apple hobbing. I was drugged. The only way to neutralize it is with a woman. In desperation, I shattered a glass and cut myself to use the pain to stay conscious–to temporarily suppress the drug’s effects. Do you understand now?”
His warm breath tickled the sensitive skin behind her car, sending a shiver down her spine.
“I would rather hurt myself than touch another woman Because the only one I want is you… You’re my woman, my wife. If I need release, it has to be with you I sent her away and called instead.

David’s voice grew raspier, and Caroline felt her pulse race. So that’s what happened!
She had noticed the broken glass beside the blood earlier but assumed it was from a struggle. It had seemed normal enough at the time.
She never imagined this was the real reason!
“So, um the drug…” Caroline stammered, her voice shaky. “It’s still in effect?”
Yeah.”
“But you should be able to control it, right? I mean, you’re–you’re already so badly hurt…”
David suddenly bit down lightly on her earlobe, his teeth grazing the delicate skin. “I had it under control… until I saw you. Now, the drug’s kicking back in.”
Caroline pondered. No way! Could my luck get any worse?
