listen.”
“I only want you!”
“But I don’t want to give myself to you!”
David gripped her chin, forcing her to look at him. “What do you think I called you here for? Just to patch up my wound? Caroline, don’t be so naive!”
“You want to vent your frustration but refuse to find another woman? Then call Elizabeth! Isn’t she the one. you’ve always liked?”
“When did I ever say I liked her?”
Caroline froze, unable to answer.
It was true
David had never once said he liked Elizabeth.
But the way he indulged her, the way he spoiled her–that wasn’t love, then what was
it?
“Besides, Elizabeth just left, David said. “I forced her out because I didn’t want to lose control and take her. That’s why I used the glass to cut myself to stay conscious. Do you understand now?”
Caroline stared into his obsidian–like eyes.
He had already sent Elizabeth away?
He only wanted me? But why? Does David really love me? Had I been the one he wanted all along?
Caroline didn’t dare dwell on it.
She was an orphan. Even family love had been a luxury let alone romantic love.
Love was something forever out of reach for her. And after what happened with Nash and Julia’s engagement… she had completely given up on it.
She knew that if she allowed herself to believe in David’s love–if she dared to hope for it–she’d be stepping into dangerous territory.
Love could trap a person’s body and soul. Once you fell, there was no escape.
She couldn’t afford to hope. She couldn’t afford to expect anything.
So, she said, “I don’t understand.”
David’s lips pressed into a hard line.
