Throughout their conversation, Alden had asked his father multiple times if he wanted to see Celeste, but Peter refused every time. He even seemed irritated whenever her name was mentioned. However, whenever Alden spoke about his mother, there was a glimmer in Peter’s eyes–something Alden kept to himself.
“Celeste, why don’t you go home? Dad is asleep, you’ve seen him–he’s awake and stable. You need to rest in a comfortable bed. The babies deserve that, too.”
Celeste had to admit she needed rest. Her back was killing her, and her feet ached. Alden had already arranged for their family to stay at the house in Westhaven, so there was no need to spend the night at a hotel. Exhausted, she finally agreed–it was time to sleep in a real bed again. She take a bath, get some rest, and clear her mind.
But before leaving, she told Alden she wanted to see Peter, even if he was asleep. Alden didn’t hesitate to nod in agreement, especially since Diana would be staying behind while he took Celeste home–and he’d also take the chance to see his wife, Serenity.
Celeste stepped into the dimly lit hospital room and sat beside Peter’s bed.
“Peter… I know you’re asleep, but I just want to say… thank you for not leaving us alone. I don’t want to be alone again. Our babies are growing well, and I haven’t found out their gender yet because I wanted to wait until you were okay, so we could do it together.”
“I know this isn’t easy, but don’t ever forget–just like you took care of me after my accident, I’ll be here for you. For our children. For our family… I love you, Peter. And only you know just how much I love you.‘
She was about to let go of his hand when his eyes opened.
But the look in them… it wasn’t the same.

“I know we need to talk, Celeste. But now isn’t the right time. So I’m asking you not to come in here again unless! say so,” Peter said, his voice cold, his gaze distant.

His words cut through her like a knife. There was something in his tone that she didn’t recognize–something sharp and unfeeling. Without saying another word, she walked out of the room, feeling her chest tighten painfully.
Of all the possible scenarios she had imagined… she never expected this..
But she stayed silent. She didn’t tell Alden about the conversation.
By the time they arrived home, Serenity greeted Alden with a warm kiss. Celeste watched and smiled faintly, though it felt hollow. Then Serenity led her inside and showed her Peter’s room.
The entire house felt unfamiliar to Celeste.
She would have much preferred their little home in Willowcombe. That was where she wanted to be. That was the house Peter had told her would be their home–the place where they would raise their children.
For the first time in weeks, she allowed herself a long bath.
Back in Slovenia, living with Peter, she had learned to take lavender baths to ease her anxiety. So tonight, she did the same. She needed something–anything–to calm the storm inside her.
But no matter how much she tried to relax, Peter’s words echoed in her mind.
The man she loved, the man who had once promised her forever, was gone.

And she couldn’t shake the feeling that… maybe… he would never come back.
After an hour in the tub, she finally got out and threw on whatever she found in the elegant, unfamiliar room. The luxury and excess around her only made her feel more out of place.
Her body ached. Her legs throbbed.
But nothing hurt more than her heart.
Something deep inside her whispered that things were not okay. That they wouldn’t be okay.
But exhaustion won in the end.
And with that bitter thought lingering in her mind, Celeste drifted into a restless sleep.
