“Come, let’s sit here,” Peter said as he helped her down on the grass in front of the cliff.
“I think I can still do it…” Celeste murmured as she adjusted herself.
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah…”
“I guess by now you know what I used to do, right?” Peter said, his voice filled with resignation.
“Yes…” Celeste answered nervously.
“Aren’t you scared? Haven’t you thought about it… and the babies?” Peter asked, anxiety creeping into his voice.
“Peter, that was a long time ago. You were too young. That’s in the past, and that’s what matters. Besides, I also know it wasn’t your fight–it was someone else’s.”
“I know it sounds ridiculous, but to me, it feels like it happened just yesterday. That damn feeling won’t go away…
“What do you mean?”
“Restlessness… It won’t leave me alone. It’s this sense of loss, like someone is missing… here.” Peter clenched his fist over his chest. “Right here, I feel this suffocating pain, the same kind of pain I felt when my mother died. A constant pain. It’s not physical, it’s not a health issue–I already got checked at the hospital.”
“What did they say?” Celeste asked, both curious and worried.
“That I’m perfectly fine, except for my memory loss. There’s nothing wrong with my heart. And I know this isn’t physical, Celeste. It’s like the person I can’t remember is fighting to come back, struggling to give me back what I’m missing… but no matter how hard I try, I can’t.”

“Peter… Before you went into surgery, I promised I’d always be here. Through the good and the bad, I’d be here to support you. I know that before agreeing to the operation, you really didn’t want to go through with it…”
“Why?”
“You were afraid of losing your memories…”

“I guess so… But all of us–believe me, all of us, including your brother–promised to be here for you, to help you, to take care of you, and to create new memories together. Ones that will help you feel better. I know it’s not much of a consolation, but I believe that little by little, you’ll start remembering who you were. And even if you don’t, it doesn’t matter. You’re alive, Peter. And that’s what truly matters.” Celeste knelt in front of him, holding his face in her hands.
She didn’t say it out loud, but she silently thanked every saint for keeping the man in front of her alive. She was truly grateful that Peter was still breathing. Theodore had once told her about Peter’s life–things Peter himself didn’t even know. And now, she finally understood so many things that hadn’t made sense when they lived in Slovenia.

She pulled Peter’s head to lier chest and softly said,
“I know everything’s a mess… I know you didn’t expect to wake up in a time when neither you nor I were ready. If 1 look at it from that perspective, at the age you remember was barely a teenager–I had just arrived in Galea. But here we are.”
“Peter, I know you’re not ready for this life, and yet, you’re doing your best. That’s something to admire. You’re a good man. You’re strong. No matter what you think of yourself, you have a good heart. And honestly? You have more lives than a cat.”
Peter let out a small smile.
“Thank you, Celeste… Really, thank you. I know I’m not the best person to be with. My life is a complete disaster, and I’m dragging you into it. I just… I just need you to help me. I know I’m not easy to deal with, and it frustrates me so much.”
