Caroline was self–aware enough to know that in David’s heart, she wasn’t important enough to surpass the Ellison family’s legacy.
David might like her–but it was just that.
A fleeting affection, something that could fade or be replaced at any moment.
David didn’t say a word. He simply held her, resting his chin against the top of her head.
He was exhausted–so drained that he didn’t even want to speak.
He had already predicted what Caroline was thinking, but there was no sense of victory in it.
For the first time, David truly understood–being able to see through everything, to control everything, was a bitter curse.
Sometimes, knowing too much only made the heart ache more.
“…Go to sleep,” he finally murmured, his voice hoarse, before closing his eyes.
Caroline tried to pull away from his embrace, but his arms instinctively tightened around her.
So she gave up and lay still, unmoving.
David fell asleep quickly, his breathing steady.
Caroline looked up at his sleeping face, biting her lip. He could sleep so peacefully. Of course, he could. This is good news for him, he is going to be a father, the Ellison family’s bloodline would continue. There is nothing for him to worry about. Naturally, he slept well.
But every time Caroline so much as shifted, David’s arms would reflexively tighten around her.
It seemed like there was no escaping his embrace tonight.

The other slid beneath the pillow, fingers curling around the knife handle.
David’s life was in her hands.

But just then, David suddenly murmured in his sleep.

He called her name, over and over again, his lips barely moving.
Caroline froze, her breathing unconsciously growing lighter.
