“Mr. Ellison, I knew you wouldn’t be so heartless as to abandon your own child…” Elizabeth sobbed. “Last night, you must have gone back to convince Caroline, begged her to accept my baby, didn’t you? So that’s what happened. I’m sorry–I misunderstood you. I thought you were cruel. I’ll take good care of myself, eat well, and give birth to a healthy, chubby baby–one who looks like you, just as smart as you. Mr. Ellison, I feel so happy right now!”
David pressed his lips into a thin line.
The details of how it happened didn’t matter anymore.
What mattered was the result. And the result was exactly what he was seeing now.
He had lost the bet–lost everything he had once treasured, the devotion he had given so wholly and exclusively–only to suffer a crushing defeat at Caroline’s hands.
If she had even the slightest bit of love for him, she wouldn’t have allowed Elizabeth to keep the baby!
Caroline had trampled on all of his feelings.
Damn that woman!
David lifted his hand and gently stroked the back of Elizabeth’s head. “Focus on your pregnancy. This child -I will have it.”
It was a promise, but also an act of defiance.
Caroline was the one who had betrayed his love first.
She had no one to blame but herself!
Elizabeth nestled deeper into his embrace, wrapping her arms around his waist. “Mr. Ellison, I’ll bring this baby into the world safe and sound!”
David bent down, scooped her up in his arms, and carefully placed her on the hospital bed.
His gaze fell on her still–flat stomach.
“Mr. Ellison,” Elizabeth took his hand, “do you want to feel it? You might not be able to tell yet, but…”
Before he could respond, she pressed his palm against her belly.
David felt nothing.
But this was his child. His gaze softened, little by little.
Thinking about how he had almost given up his own child for that woman–Caroline–made him feel ridiculous.
He had been bewitched.
Had Caroline cast some kind of spell on him?

“If you need anything, just tell me,” David said flatly. “The baby comes first.”
“Okay. But…”
“Hm?”

“Mr. Ellison, Caroline is still outside,” Elizabeth said deliberately. “Should we let her in? Leaving her out there all alone doesn’t seem very nice.”
Now that her position was secured and David had accepted the baby, she was eager to flaunt it in front of Caroline.
She wanted to see how Caroline would act now that the tables had turned!
David’s expression darkened. “Let her wait.”
Caroline waited outside like that until nightfall before David finally stepped out of the hospital room.
He found her sitting on a bench, eating a piece of bread.
It was dry and tough, leaving crumbs on the corner of her lips. In her other hand, she held a bottle of water.
The moment she saw him, Caroline stood up. “Can we leave now?”
She didn’t question him. She didn’t complain.
Her complete submission only made the fire in David’s chest burn hotter.
His gaze flicked to the bread in her hand.
“Oh, I was hungry, so I just grabbed something,” Caroline said casually. “You wouldn’t let me leave, and you didn’t give me any food. What else was I supposed to do? Starve?”
He let out a cold scoff. “Oh, that’s right. I almost forgot–you’re pregnant. And with twins, no less. Can’t have you going hungry.”
Caroline said nothing.
Of course, he hadn’t forgotten.
He had done it on purpose. Making her wait. Making her starve.
David’s torment had begun again.
