She didn’t want to stay here for even another second–let alone see David’s face.
Just looking at him made her furious!

As the elevator doors slowly closed, a slender, well–defined hand suddenly reached in, stopping them from shutting completely. The next moment, someone stepped inside.
Caroline looked up. “David?”
His face was expressionless as he walked toward her.
The elevator doors closed behind him.
Caroline instinctively backed away, but the space inside was limited. Within seconds, her back hit the cold metal wall.
“You… you stay back.” She swallowed. “David, this is the company!”
“I know.”
She darted a glance upward. “There are security cameras in here!”
“So?”
Caroline felt helpless. “What do you want?”
David stood before her, one hand pressed against the wall beside her ear, the other gripping the safety railing, effectively trapping her within his arms.
Then, he lowered his head. “You have quite the temper when it comes to me. But when Andrew bullies you, you don’t know how to fight back? Where did all your sharp edges go? Why didn’t you stand your ground?”
“Or is it that you only know how to cause trouble in front of me, but the moment you’re faced with someone else, you just shrink away?”
Caroline responded calmly, “Mr. Ellison, that’s not true. When you humiliate me, I take it quietly. I don’t resist, do I? That glass of red wine–you poured it right over my head, and I didn’t even try to dodge.”
David scoffed. “You deserved it.”
“If that’s how you see it, then fine. I’ll take it.”
The elevator was silent except for the soft beeping of the floor numbers rising.
Caroline was growing anxious. This was the employee elevator, not David’s private one. If it stopped on a floor and the doors opened, what if someone saw them like this?
The gossip would spread through Ellison Group like wildfire.
Someone save me! I just wanted to do my job in peace. Is that one peaceful month truly gone for good? Is David going to be back in my life again?

She kept stealing nervous glances at the elevator doors worried they might open at any second.
Meanwhile, David remained completely composed, as nothing was wrong.

“Caroline, letting Andrew push you around is an embarrassment to me,” he said, his breath warm against her face. “Because he’s nothing but my defeated rival. No matter what, you shouldn’t have let him win. I know you’re capable of handling him–so why didn’t you fight back?”
“Because it wasn’t worth the trouble,” Caroline answered. “In the middle of the workday, at the office, what was he really going to do?”
“So you just let him walk all over you?“.
Caroline tilted her head up at him and smiled. “Isn’t that my whole purpose in the Ellison family? To be everyone’s punching bag?”
David’s eyes darkened.
“And besides, David, what’s the point of you holding onto this? The only reason Andrew dared to treat me that way was because of what you did to me at the celebration banquet. If you protected me, spoiled me, treated me like I mattered–would he have dared to humiliate me? Would he have acted all high and mighty in front of me? So really, this all started because of you. And yet here you are, acting like you’re doing me some huge favor–like I’m the one at fault for not fighting back.”
Caroline lifted her hand and jabbed her finger firmly against David’s chest.
His shirt wrinkled slightly where she pressed.
