Chapter 22
**Mallory**
“You need to rest Luna,” the doctor’s warm hand landed on my shoulder softly, jerking me up from sleep.
“I’m fine.” I retorted, pissed at the interference.
“Your bandages need to be changed Luna Evie,” she remarked and I glanced down at the white badge wrapped around my thighs
A large red circle was gradually spreading. I had torn open the stitches in my sleep.
I walked grudgingly away from Ivan’s hospital bed and followed the doctor to her office, where she took off my bandages, revealing the healing gash left there.
The wound was deep, left there by the large werewolf in anger after my dagger injured one of its legs.
I grimaced at the deep gash and wondered why it was taking so long to heal. Werewolves have exceptional fast healing abilities
“Do you think it’s infected?” I asked the doctor who peered at the wounds worriedly.
“Not that I can see Luna. It’s healing slower than usual but it will close up in a few days.
But I’d suggest I run some tests to be sure.” She declared and took a sample of the blood surrounding the wound.
She stored the sample in a labeled petri dish and disinfected the surface of my wound before wrapping it up with fresh bandages.
1 hobbled out of her office and back into Ivan’s room and took a seat next to him, my hands reaching for his.
My eyes observed his features, his long eyelashes that fluttered intermittently, and his small well, well–carved nostrils, which led to small lips.
A smile found its way on my face as I admired his lips. How the brownish upper part and pink lower part seem to blend and create a beauty that called to mine.
I brushed the dirty thoughts aside hurriedly and stroked his palms, tears welling up in my eyes and guilt tore at my heart.
It scary. I’m so sorry Ivan,” I cried, my tears dripping on his still hands.

Was there something wrong? Was it all in my head?

“It’s probably all in my head,” I declared, moving to adjust the blanket that covered him and walking outside the room.
Maya was coming from the opposite direction and I was relieved when I saw her again.
She remained in the servant’s quarters throughout the battle, and the edge dwellers didn’t bother to go there.
“Luna Evie!” She began, her voice raised in protest.
“You shouldn’t be out of your room, your stitches will get torn if you move too much.”
I’m fine, Maya; my wounds are getting healed. Being cooped up in bed is hard for me.” I remarked, allowing her to take my arm and lead me outside.
I regretted giving Maya my arm to lead me as she took slow steps even a snail would beat us in a race.
“You can walk faster than this, Maya; I won’t collapse,” I remarked dryly.
“We need to take it easy. Your bandage was just changed.”
I rolled my eyes and continued at the frustratingly slow pace, a relieved sigh escaping my lips, and we reached the house.
Outside, Kelvin stood in the middle of some soldiers relaying instructions to them.
He dismissed them away as he saw me and walked over.
“You should be resting Luna,”
“Urghh.” I groaned. “I’m sick of everyone telling me what to do! My husband is still unconscious so forgive me if I can’t rest until he wakes up.” I blurted.
1 blinked rapidly, my eyes darting from Maya to Kelvin who looked surprised at my outburst.
“My apologies Luna,” Kelvin answered, his head bowed. Maya followed suit 1, murmuring an apology.
“All right. Have all the edge dwellers been rounded up?”
“Yes Luna, they are not secured in the dungeons with guards watching them at all times. Once the Alpha wakes up they’ll be tried and punished.”
I nodded and instructed Maya to get me some water.
“Any word from Moonshade pack?”

“Well? Has it?” I pressed.
“Just once. He exerted himself while training and passed out for a few days.”
“What do you think was the cause? Fatigue could hardly make a werewolf pass out for days.”

“That just reminds me, Luna, I have to give the head warrior some instructions.” He blurted and hurried out of the room.
Kelvin’s act was suspicious, meaning there was a bigger story behind Ivan’s unconsciousness.
But since he assured me he was going to wake up, I was content to wait for him to explain.
A knock sounded on the door and the clinic doctor popped her head through.
“Luna, I have some news.”
From the look on her face, it wasn’t good news of Ivan waking up and my mind raced at what the news could be.
“Well, spit out,” I barked, my voice coming out harsher than intended.

“I analyzed the blood sample we took from you; at first, it came up normal, but then I compared it to one we took from the Alpha and discovered something in his sample.”
My breathing turned erratic and I could feel my face turning pale.
“The Alpha’s blood contains a poison called Vile Moss.
It’s not deadly, but it’s preventing his wounds from healing, and as long as it remains, the Alpha will remain in a coma.”
I stumbled back, thankfully for the chair that broke my fall and felt the air sucked out of me.
Vile Moss? I haven’t even heard of such a poison.
The look on her face said there was more she hasn’t said.
is there an antidote for this poison?” I choked out, my vision blurry with tears.
“I’m afraid Luna, there’s no antidote.”
