His lips brushed against her ear, his voice dangerously low. “Did you really hear me? Do you remember everything I said?”
“Yes.”
“No.” His smirk was sharp, his tone cruel. “Only something unforgettable will make sure you never forget my words tonight.”
What did he mean? What was he going to do?
Caroline instinctively placed her hands on his shoulders, trying to push him away, but he caught her by the waist, pulling her tightly into his embrace.
In an instant, she was pinned beneath him.
A wave of panic hit her as she realized exactly what he intended.
He wanted to claim her–to make her his.
Pure fear gripped her.
She opened her mouth, but no words came. It was as if her voice had been stolen.

“I remember. I… I really heard you. I took everything to heart,” Caroline stammered, her voice trembling. “I
won’t see Nash again. I don’t want to be with him. David, you’re imagining things!”
“I don’t believe you.”
Caroline quickly said, “I’m with you every single day. You know exactly where I go and who I see–I couldn’t hide anything from you even if I tried! If you don’t believe me, you can watch me as much as you want. And if I ever see Nash again, may I be struck by lightning!”
She swore it. But David’s gaze didn’t waver.
“Yet you still won’t tell me what Nash’s driver said.”
“I did!”
“Lies.”
A wave of despair crashed over her. Would I make it through tonight?
She had a terrible feeling–David wasn’t going to let her go.
He wanted her to belong to him completely, with no room for escape.
David’s lips grazed her neck, his breath warm as he spoke. Each word sent a shiver through her, his lips teasing her skin with a featherlight touch. Her body weakened under the sensation, yet a deep fear held her captive.

A low, dark chuckle rumbled from his chest, the sound echoing in the stillness of the room.
Smooth. Dark. Dangerous. Trapping her in place.
“You will live as my wife. And if you die, you’ll be my widow. Do you understand?”
His voice was soft, deceptively gentle.
But everything about him at that moment felt suffocating.
“David…” Caroline’s voice quivered. “You don’t have to be this jealous. Let’s just talk. I swear, I’ll never see Nash again. If you don’t believe me, I’ll write it down, I’ll sign it, I’ll put my fingerprint on it–whatever you need. Just tell me what it’ll take for you to believe me.”
