Peter had just left the bedroom, making his way toward the living room when, at the top of the stairs, he ran into a familiar figure. Katherine was coming up, and Peter knew her well enough to recognize that she wasn’t exactly someone to be trusted–neither in the past nor now. She was someone to be wary of. In a way, he could understand the concern or gut feeling Celeste, his future wife, had about her.
“Katherine, where exactly do you think you’re going?” Peter asked sharply.
“Sorry, I think I got lost. I was looking for the restroom…” Ratherine sald shamelessly.
“You and I both know that’s the last thing you were doing. What do you really want?” Peter asked, irritated.
“Alright, you caught me. I wanted to talk to you alone for a moment. And while I was at it, I figured I’d deliver a gift I brought for your fiancée,” Katherine said calmly.
“I have no idea what you could possibly need to talk to me about, but if that was really your intention, you shouldn’t have come upstairs.”
“Well, I didn’t want to start any false rumors if people saw us talking alone. Especially considering Celeste.”
“For exactly that reason, I don’t think we should be having a private conversation away from everyone else.
“But I want to.”
“You’re not going to let this go, are you?”
“Hmm? Nope.”
“Fine, follow me… Let’s go to my study. But leave the door open. Whatever we need to talk about can be said with the door open, right?”
“As you wish. Are you afraid Celeste will misunderstand?”
“I won’t lie to you–yes, I do fear that… and more.”
“Fair enough. Whatever you say.
Peter led the way to his study, and as promised, left the door open. He sat behind his desk while Katherine took a seat in one of the chairs across from him.
“Before anything else, I want to thank you,” Katherine said sincerely.
“Thank me?” Peter asked, intrigued.
“Yes! If it weren’t for you, Alden wouldn’t be here today. You and I would never have crossed paths again, and we wouldn’t have Ethan in our lives.”
“You know I don’t remember any of that, right?”
“I know! But listen, Peter, I may be a lot of things, but ungrateful isn’t one of them,” Katherine said seriously.
“Theodore also told me that I approved a lifelong pension for you…”
“Oh, yes! And I’m incredibly grateful for that. It really helped me when I came back. But you know me, Peter–I don’t like taking handouts.”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course. So, I’m asking you to cancel that support. And the money you gave me–I’ll be returning it. It helped

me get settled and start my business, but I don’t want you thinking I owe you anything.”
“Hinm… That’s not why I did it. I suppose I did it because you’re Alden’s mother, and in some way, I felt I had to help you.”
“Maybe… But it’s better if you don’t. You’re about to start new life, Peter. You’re finally going to have the family you always wanted. I don’t want to be a thorn in your side.
“Do you really think I didn’t notice your woman? She was drowning in jealousy.”
“Why?”

“I suppose it’s because of me… though I wouldn’t be too sure. I think it was actually Marcus’s wife. Or am I wrong? To be honest, even I felt a bit jealous when I saw her in person. I had already seen her at your
grandmother’s birthday, but that was ages ago. That woman never lost her charm. I guess our granddaughter is going to be beautiful–you’ve got good genes.”
“Katherine, my wife is waiting for me. Was that all you needed to say?”
“Yes… well, no. Peter, tell me something. Are you really sure about this life? Are you truly happy with what you have?” Katherine asked confidently.
“Why are you asking that?” Peter responded, intrigued.
