Chapter 4
I went home and packed up my things.
I threw away all items related to Lucas.
When I saw the engagement ring he gave me, I froze for a moment.
But in the end, I coldly flushed it down the toilet.
This time, I shouldn’t be coming back.
All I carried with me was a grass–weaved grasshopper.
It was a gift from a friend before I returned to the Coleman family.
Three days later, Dr. Allen held my “funeral.”
I was arranged to hide in a small room behind the funeral hall.
“Maybe he’ll realize?”
Dr. Allen said.
“You’ve given so much for your marriage. I always feel like you shouldn’t leave so quietly.”
“Let him know about your death. At the very least, he should shed a tear for you.”
“Seeing him cry and regret would ease the hatred in your heart, Miss Coleman, wouldn’t it?”
He pulled out his phone and dialed Lucas’s number.
The phone rang for a long time without being answered.
“Maybe he’s busy,”
Dr. Allen comforted me and continued dialing.
Just as Dr. Allen was about to give up, the tenth call was finally picked up.
“Hello?”
Lucas’s voice came from the other end.

“Mr. Chapman, your wife passed away from heavy bleeding. Would you like to come see her for the last
time?”
There was a long silence on the other end.
Lucas seemed stunned for a moment, then became somewhat impatient.
“What did you get from her? Is it worth it for you to make such a fuss with her?”
“Is Violet with you now?”
“Tell her not to make a scene. I know she’s upset about having a stillborn, but once my nephew turns one
month old, I’ll take her to the Maldives, the place she’s always wanted to go, to relax.”
On the other end, I heard the sound of a baby crying.
Immediately after, I heard Vanessa and my parents‘ voices.
“Whose phone is this?”
I heard my mother asking.
“It’s nothing, Mom. Violet is throwing a tantrum with me.”
Lucas’s voice was quieter, as if he was far from the phone.
Then, my mom’s voice rang out angrily.
“Violet, don’t cause trouble on such a joyful day.”
“If you don’t want to come see your sister, then don’t, so you don’t bring bad luck to Vanessa.”
My mother’s voice faded, and the phone returned to Lucas’s hands.
“Alright, I’m busy here. Dr. Allen, please try to talk some sense into her. Don’t let her do anything foolish.”
Before Dr. Allen could say anything, he hung up the phone.
I didn’t have any friends, and the funeral hall was empty.
I stepped out of the small room and patted Dr. Allen’s shoulder.
“No need to wait.”
“Help me hide my tracks, I need to resign from the company and leave immediately.”

Under Dr. Allen’s help, I secretly went to the company.
I let out a deep breath and knock on the door.
“Come in,” boss’s deep voice calls.
Gabriel was wearing his tie when the door opened, and he had grown more mature and handsome after almost a year.
Seeing my arrival, Gabriel was puzzled.
“At this time, you should be on maternity leave; I’m not that cruel to make a pregnant woman work.”
His gaze fell on my emaciated stomach, and he raised an eyebrow, his doubts increasing.
I give a wry smile and give a simple explanation.
“The marriage with my husband has broken down, and I had an abortion.”
Gabriel nodded thoughtfully.
“Congratulations on returning to the workplace.”
“I have something to give you.”
Two voices spoke at the same time.
Gabriel’s eyes fell on the envelope, then he looked up to meet my gaze.
“What’s this?”
I swallow the lump in my throat. “It’s my resignation.”
His face falls. “What?”
“Gabriel…I’m not asking for your permission. I am leaving.”
He snatches the envelope from my hand and tears it in half and then throws it in the wastepaper basket.
“You will do no such thing.”
He paced in front of me, agitated, speaking rapidly as he said something.
“I let you marry another man,get pregnant, even generously giving you a year of maternity leave. I waited for you to return and continue as my senior secretary, but instead, you returned early, wounded, and now you want to quit. Where are you going? Is running away the answer just because you’ve been
hurt?”

“That’s impossible. Now it’s clear your choice was wrong, you’ll stay here, quietly. I’ll give you time to heal, but leaving? Absolutely not.”
It was as if he had lost his sanity. He strode toward the door and hurriedly flung it open.
“Go back to your desk and get to work.”
“No.”
“Do. As. I. Say,” he growls.
“No.”
“Do not tell me no!” He’s about to go into cardiac arrest. “You work for me, not the other way around.”
“I’m taking some time off for me.” I cross my arms as I watch his tantrum unfold.
“I tore up your letter. It doesn’t matter. Take a month off and come to your senses.”
Gabriel paces back and forth in front of me, his hands are on his hips, and his eyes are crazy.
“Fine, twenty percent pay raise, that’s it,” he snaps.
I stay silent.
“It’s not about the money.”
“Double your wage and do not talk to me again. This is daylight robbery,” he screams. “You are trying to fuck me up the ass, and I won’t have it.”
He puts his hands on his hips and begins to pace again, his mind is racing.
“I’m leaving because I’ve bought myself a house.”
He takes a step back, completely shocked. “You bought a house?”
I nod. “In Greenville.”
“Where’s that?”
“Maine.”
“Why the fuck would you buy a house in Maine?” He screws up his face in horror.
“Because…it’s time.”

“For what?” he bellows. “To turn fucking Amish?”
I looked at him wearily, unable to understand why he was so determined to stop me from leaving He was just my boss, wasn’t he?
I tore open my wounds in front of him, explaining in a voice that barely held together
“Because my husband is a piece of trash who loves my sister, disregarding my life. He tried to serantly swap our child with hers. As a result, I was left shattered, both physically and mentally, 1 need a feast start, a new environment to heal the broken parts of me. I have to leave, is that reason good enoug
He pauses for a moment as if processing my words.
“You’re leaving me?” he whispers, “For good?”
“I have to.”
His eyes search mine.
“I’m sorry.”
At this time, Dr.Allen suddenly ran into the office in a hurry.
“Go quickly! Vincent has noticed something’s off and will find this place!”
I shot my boss an apologetic glance. “I’m sorry, Gabriel. I have to go.”
Dr.Allen hurried me to the airport, and we rushed through the check–in without pausing for a moment
On the plane, looking out the window at the shrinking land, I let out a long breath.
My five–year marriage with Lucas had finally ended.
Dr. Allen handed me a new SIM card.
“Miss Coleman, I’ve been preparing this since you contacted me.”
“I’ve canceled your old SIM card. The ID will take a little longer, but if you have any doubts during this time, please tell me right away.”
I couldn’t help but picture Gabriel’s shocked and panicked expression as I left in such a reth I nodded. trying to steady myself.
I needed some time to figure out whether I should go through with my decision.
I was Gabriel’s senior secretary, trained by him personally. In truth, it was this job that had earned me

the little bit of attention I got from the Webb family.
Leaving so suddenly felt undeniably ungrateful.
Dr. Allen staying with me.
He told me not to worry about him.
If he stayed in America, Lucas would find out about his actions, and he would still get into trouble.
It was better to sell the hospital and start fresh abroad.
He had excellent medical skills and did well abroad, so I didn’t press him further.
Our life continued peacefully until a phone call came.
“Where the hell did you hide her?”
Lucas’s voice, desperate, came through the line.
