Chapter 12
Chapter 12
In the past ten years, Elliott’s grandfather had treated me with respect and care.
Out of duty, out of sentiment, I decided to go.
I set aside the grievances between Elliott and me, and rushed back to the Stone family estate overnight.
Lying weakly in bed, the old man was a shadow of his former self. His once–sharp eyes were now
clouded with sorrow.
“Daniella, I have wronged you. The Stone Family has wronged you.”
When I married Elliott, I was young and naive.
But Elliott’s grandfather, having fought in the business world for a lifetime, knew very well how unfair
that contract was.
He had cut off all other possibilities in my life, luring me into sign the contract, burying my happiness in this golden cage.
I remained silent for a moment.I was silent for a moment before finally speaking. “I don’t blame you.
Back then, it was my choice and I made it willingly. I don’t blame anyone.”
“I spoiled Elliott too much.”
“No matter what happens to him in the future, he brought it upon himself. I don’t dare hope for you return to his side. I only ask that, if he is in dire straits, you at least give him a meal.”
The lawyer beside him handed me a contract.
Elliott’s grandfather had prepared to transfer most of his shares and assets into my name.
He even entrusting me with the company’s future.
The only thing left for Elliott was a villa and a small number of shares.
I shook my head with a faint smile.
“Grandfather, this responsibility is too great for me. I can’t bear it.”
“More importantly, I’ve already spent ten years of my life on Elliott. For the rest of my days, I ju live for myself and never be entangled with him again.”

Elliott’s grandfather truly doted on this grandson, even at his deathbed, still thinking of paving the way for him. Even if it meant sacrificing someone else’s life, he didn’t care.
But I had long outgrown my weakness. I would not be swayed by Elliott’s sweet words nor deceived by the old man’s gestures of goodwill.
I understood now–every so–called gift of fate comes with a hidden price tag.
Seeing my resolve, Elliott’s grandfather let out a heavy cough.
Elliott also became agitated.
He looked at me with reddened eyes, wanting to speak, but was silenced by a wave of Elliott’s grandfather’s hand.
I bowed to him, unwilling to stay any longer.
As I reached the door, I heard the helpless and heartbroken scolding of Elliott’s grandfather.
“Give up. Elliott.”
“The wealth of the Stone family cannot buy her return.”
“You’ve gone too far.”
Then, the sharp sound of an alarm pierced the air.
The elderly man, who had worked so hard his entire life, had finally reached his end, burdened with
regret.
I asked the doctor to send a wreath in his memory, a final gesture to put my past with the Stone Family to
rest.
As I reached toward the street corner, Elliott came rushing after me.
Right there, on the bustling sidewalk, he fell to his knees.
“Daniella, grandfather is dead. You are all I have.”
“I know I was wrong. I’m really willing to change. Just tell me what exactly do I have to do for you to
come back to me?”
I could tell that this time his apology and repentance were sincere.
But just as such as assurances, I had heard it all before. Too many times, over too many years.
My Heart
Chapter 12
I looked at the children running past us, then at the elderly woman wiping the sweat from a little boy’s
forehead.
After a long silence, I finally spoke.
“Unless… time turns back, and the dead come back to life.”
Realizing the impossibility of this wish, Elliott broke down, sobbing like a spoiled child.
I remained unmoved. Amidst his anguished cries, I called for a taxi.
In the rearview mirror, I caught a glimpse of Elliott still kneeling on the ground, collapsing in despair.
I told the driver to drive.
No hesitation. No looking back.
