Ethan was speechless. Chloe mumbled, “I wanted to get Mrs. Yates her desserts quickly.”
“Don’t involve me. I didn’t tell you to do that.” Mrs. Yates said politely to Mrs. Wilson, I did that to gauge the Windhams‘ attitudes. They’re as biased as the rumors say, favoring the adopted. daughter over their own.”

Mrs. Wilson felt even more sympathy for Alice. If they were this biased now, how had they treated Alice as a child?
Chloe feigned vulnerability.“I’m an orphan. Alice dislikes me; she thinks I stole everything, but I never thought that way.”
Mrs. Wilson slapped her. Chloe was stunned.
Mrs. Wilson said sternly, “Stop playing the victim! If the Windhams wanted to repay their debt, there were better ways. I’ve never seen such a way of showing gratitude!”
