Chapter 72
“You good?”
Haelor asked, his gaze focused on me. I sent him a small nod before turning my attention to Quentin who had claimed a central spot on the stage.
I found it heartwarming how Haelor always asked about my wellbeing and made sure I was alright.
“And now the auction will be in full swing.” Quentin brought the microphone close to his mouth.
The main aim of this auction will be to raise funds for the army,” Quentin explained. “Doing this can better help in providing better resistance against any foreign enemies we might encounter.”
The whole room fell into applause. I leaned back into the plush seat, clapping my hands and mirroring the actions of other people seated around me.
“If you would please,” Quentin said to a woman standing by the stage.
She clapped her hands twice and not a moment later, a line of men trooped in, each of them holding one antique object.
The objects ranged from paintings, to sculptures and even items owned by renowned celebrities.
“Let’s get started with the famed Fein Gernau’s painting titled ‘Glass house‘.” Quentin gestured at the first painting that was displayed.
“This piece will be going for two hundred thousand.” He squinted towards the crowd. “Do I see any hands?”
“Two hundred thousand.” A woman raised her placard.
around
“Two hundred and five thousand.” Another man piped in. There was an air of confidence aroun him as he made his bid.
It went on like that, with more people popping up and placing even higher bids.
In the end, the painting was sold to an elderly gentleman for three hundred thousand. Quentin hoved to the next piece which was an antique watch. The watch was explained to be over a century
old.

Jturned to Haelor just as his eyes flicked away from me. By how close I was to him, I could smell the cologne he’d used. It was undisputed that tonight, Haelor smells incredibly good. I could already feel myself getting dizzy from the smell of his perfume.
He shyly turned to me. “What?”
“You tell me. You’ve been so quiet. What’s on your mind?” I folded my arms.
He simply shrugged, an unreadable look passing through his eyes for a brief second.
I could tell there was something he wanted to ask, something resting on his mind.
“Funds for the military,” I continued. “What do you think about that?”
There was a small smile playing on his lips as he watched me. Teasing him was something I would
never get tired of.
“And I still remember what you said back at the entrance to the club? What was that about? I
continued to tease.
His cheek reddened just a little and I noticed him visibly trying to look away. Call it sadistic but I realized in teasing him as a form of torment.
“Or do you want me to answer that?” I sent him a look.
The smile on his lips slowly faded and in its stead, a serious look had popped up. For a brief second, I wondered if he was going to do it; ask me to be his mate.
My heart fluttered as the nerves flowed through me. Even if he really was going to ask that, it would make any sense to do it here.
“I’ll be returning to the border soon.” He finally said.
I was stunned. “What?”
“I’ve been meaning to tell you that,” he explained. “Hopefully, I’ll be able to spend some time with you before I eventually leave.”
Asharp pain hit my chest at his words. It wasn’t like this was the first time where he’d be leaving for
the borders or the war front.
But it hurt this much because I thought we’d have a bit more time together. I’d initially hoped I’d get

to spend some time with him. Seems I’d been wrong to just assume that.
The pain in my chest increased, like my heat was squeezing in on itself. Without thinking, I immediately reached for Haleor’s hand in a bid to ease the pain just a little.
“Melanie?” I could barely hear Haelor’s voice over the pain that was slowly racking through my body.
“Melanie!” I felt his arm go around me. “What’s wrong with you?”
“Hurts,” That was all I could mutter as I pointed to my chest.
His eyes widened with what looked like realization. And just as quick as it had come, his eyes darkened on instinct.
I barely had any time to ponder on what that look on his face meant when another searing pain hit me square in the chest.
