Chapter 106
A nervous flutter filled my stomach as I sped up, watching the car carefully. They mirrored my speed, matching my every move. I glanced at Cyrus, hoping to keep him calm, but he had already noticed. His small face was set with worry.
“Doris,” Tina, my wolf, growled within me, her voice low and tense. “These people are full of malice. They reek of blood… they’re dangerous.” The words shudder me. Tina’s senses rarely failed. I felt Cyrus lean closer, sniffing the air. His face grew tense. “Mom,” he whispered, his

voice small. “I smell it too. Blood. It… it scares me.” I reached over, giving his hand a
reassuring squeeze. “I know, sweetheart. Just stay calm, okay? We’re going to be fine.” His little hand gripped mine tightly, and I could see him trying to summon his courage. “I’ll protect you, Mom. No matter what.”
Emotion welled up in me at his bravery. I wanted to tell him he didn’t have to, that I was the one meant to protect him. But instead, I focused on getting us out of this. I pressed down harder on the gas, trying to lose our tail, but they stayed close, as if mocking my
efforts.
They didn
care about being seen. Their persistence felt like a message, as though they
wanted me to know I was their target.
My nerves were fraying when a set of flashing lights appeared in front of us. Police cars, blocking the road up ahead. I felt relieved as I slowed down and pulled over for the officer at my window.
“Ma’am, we observed you speeding back there. Can you tell me why that was?” the officer asked, his voice steady I took a shaky breath, trying to find the words. “It’s just… someone’s been following us for a while now,” I explained, “I thought I could lose them by going faster, but they just kept right behind us. I didn’t know what else to do…“He nodded, and scanned the area before glancing back at the black car that had been tailing us. “I understand. Just stay calm. We’ll handle it.” Before he could say more, I noticed several other officers. moving toward the black car. Suddenly, it took off, speeding away into the darkness.
The officer turned back to me, a reassuring look on his face. “They’re gone now, ma’am. But we’ll escort you home to make sure you’re safe.” “Thank you so much,” I replied. I felt better seeing Cyrus looking more at ease.

With the police leading the way, we followed them through the quiet streets of our neighborhood. I parked the car and exhaled deeply, grateful to finally be home. I looked at Cyrus, and gave him a small smile. “Are we safe now, Mom?” he asked softly. I leaned down, pressing a kiss to his forehead. “Yes, honey. We’re safe now.”
Once inside, I helped him get ready for bed, tucking him in with extra care. “You were so brave today,” I whispered, smoothing back his hair. He smiled, reaching for my hand. “I was just trying to protect you, Mom. I don’t want anyone to hurt you.”

Tears pricked at my eyes. “And I’ll always protect you, too,” I murmured, my heart full of love for my brave boy. “Goodnight, my sweet Cyrus.”
After
After he drifted off to sleep, I finally allowed myself to relax. But just as I was about to head to my own room, something caught my eye, a small envelope hanging from my bedroom window. Frowning, I walked over and pulled it down. My heart stopped when I saw what was written on it, in my own lipstick: Looking forward to meeting you, Miss Doris!
A chill ran through me as I stared at the note. Who had left this? How had they gotten so close without me sensing them? I opened the window, looking out into the quiet, empty yard, bathed in moonlight. Everything seemed peaceful, but a strange, foreboding feeling hung in the air. “Doris,” Tina’s voice echoed, her tone sharp and alert. “They were here. I L can smell it… that same bloody stench.”
I was suddenly filled with apprehension. Whoever had been following us hadn’t just left, they’d come onto our property, and taunted me by leaving a message so close to where
Cyrus and I slept..
“Carlos,” I murmured, almost as if saying his name could somehow make sense of this. Part of me wondered if he had any idea who these people were, if he could help. But then, I thought of Odette, her perfect face and gentle smile, and jealousy reared up again.
I shook my head, forcing myself to focus. Whoever this was, they weren’t here to play games. They wanted something, something that involved me. And if it meant keeping Cyrus, safe, I’d fight whoever, or whatever, was behind this.
