Chapter 14
Alaric remembered all too well–Mina had told him, over and over again, that she didn’t
want Rachel too close to him.
And yet, he had never listened. Because the one who couldn’t let go… wasn’t him.
So why should he have obeyed?
first, it had been easy to dismiss her jealousy as nothing more than another one of her
possessive outbursts. But slowly, something shifted.
Rachel was patient, gentle, understanding.
Mina was volatile, demanding, reckless.
It was the first time he had ever seen disappointment in her eyes. And yet, he hadn’t cared.
He had even convinced himself that Mina was merely playing games. That she was only testing his limits, making him chase after her.
Because Mina had always been that way–needy, desperate, willing to do anything for him.’
Until that trip to the Shadowfang Mountains.
The idea of the trip hadn’t even been his–it had been Rachel’s.
Alaric had been surprised, considering Rachel had never shown much interest in outdoor
excursions before.
But he hadn’t questioned it. And when she insisted on coming along, something in him had swelled with satisfaction.
Mina hated traveling through the wild. She feared the rogue–infested woods, the labyrinth–like terrain, the isolation.

‘And yet, for him, she had been willing to endure it.

Alaric to allow her to come. In fact, he had even begun to entertain the idea of finalizing
their bond once they returned.
He would arrange the mating ceremony in advance. Perhaps even surprise her with it.
But things hadn’t gone as planned. Because halfway through the journey, Mina had almost
killed Rachel.
Alaric could still remember the blood.
Rachel, collapsed at the edge of a steep drop, her leg slashed open, dark crimson spilling
onto the rocks.
The wound was deep–bone–deep. The scent of it was sickly and raw, standing out even
against the damp forest air.
But what had truly shaken him–what had enraged him–was the look in Mina’s eyes. Cold.
Ruthless. As if she had wanted Rachel dead.
The gathered expedition wolves had all seen it. No excuse she could make. If word spread, it would be a disaster. The bonding ceremony would be questioned.
His mother–who had never supported their bond in the first place–would use this as proof
that Mina wasn’t fit to be his mate.
Alaric had no choice. So he left her there.
Alone.
For an entire month.
Looking back, the decision gnawed at his chest like a wound that refused to heal.
Because when Mina finally returned… She was no longer the same.
Bijt it did Mina’s fault. Even if she hated Rachel, even if she felt threatened–she couldn’t

have meant to kill her.
Alaric clenched his fists, his head throbbing. He felt like he was missing something.
Something important.
Exhaling sharply, he reached for his phone. “Find out everything you can about what happened that night in Shadowfang Mountains,” he instructed his Beta.
“And…” His grip tightened.
“Contact the best specialists from the Silverclaw Pack. If they can’t help, I’ll take Mina myself to the Duskhowl Pack. Whatever it takes.”
Rachel’s reaction to this news was immediate. She froze.

Alaric noticed the way her fingers curled ever so slightly, the way her shoulders tensed
before she forced out a delicate, almost fragile smile.
“Alaric, Mina is still so weak. Moving her right now could be dangerous…”
Alaric pinched the bridge of his nose.
“She’s been here for a week,” he said flatly. “And there’s been no improvement. I won’t just
sit here and do nothing.”
He met her gaze, unwavering.
“I’ve already arranged everything. The medical team arrives tomorrow.”
Rachel’s fingers twitched at her sides. For a brief moment, Alaric thought he saw something
dark flicker in her expression.
But then, just as quickly, she lowered her gaze. “…Of course. If that’s what you believe is
best.”
Alaric didn’t dwell on the unease lingering in the air. But the moment Rachel left his room,
