Chapter 16
Alaric felt his blood roar in his veins, a primal, searing rage burning through his very core.
“After Miss.Mina was brought back from the Shadowfang Mountains, her legs were already shattered, and her internal organs were failing. She was in critical condition. But Rachel-” her voice darkened, venom dripping from every syllable, “-Rachel conspired with Zane to deceive you. They presented a false image of her recovery, convincing everyone, including you, that she was fine.”
The nurse was sobbing uncontrollably now, her body trembling as she desperately clung to any hope of mercy.
“Yesterday, when Rachel learned you were planning to transfer Mina to another pack’s medical center, she panicked! She was terrified that the new doctors would uncover the
truth. So she ordered me to act first.”
Alaric’s claws pressed into his palms, drawing blood.
“It doesn’t stop there,” the nurse continued between ragged breaths, eyes darting wildly. “She made me mix ground red pepper, salt, and other irritants into Mina’s medicine–just enough to make her wounds burn, to make her suffer, and to drive a wedge between you
and her.”
Alaric could barely hear anything over the sound of his own pulse pounding in his ears.
“And… and originally, Rachel’s plan was for me to accompany Mina to the Duskhowl Pack. I was supposed to poison her food slowly, making sure she died unnoticed in a foreign land. That way, no one could trace it back to her.”
The confession spilled out like a dam breaking. Her voice broke into a wheezing cry.
The room was suffocatingly silent.
Alaric barely registered his own breathing. He had been blind. Stupid.

Every time Mína had winced, every time she had curled up in pain, every time she had cried out for help–she had been telling him.
And what had he done?
He had stood there, watching her suffer, thinking she was being manipulative.
He had let Rachel and Zane lead him, believing every carefully spun lie.
A deep, guttural growl rumbled in his chest, so low it made the entire room tremble. Before
he could speak, his assistant entered, his expression tense.
“Alpha,” the Beta said, his voice barely concealing urgency. “The evidence you requested from Shadowfang Mountains–one of the expedition members has provided us with
something.”
Alaric turned sharply, his golden eyes blazing.
“A recording,” the Beta explained. “One of the pack members had a hidden camera strapped
to his gear. He didn’t tell anyone at the time, because he was only documenting his own
experience.”
the Beta hesitated. “But…” He exhaled. “He was standing in the perfect position to capture what really happened that night.”
Alaric stared at the screen as the footage played. The angle wasn’t ideal, but it was enough.
Mina stood there, tense, her fists clenched as Rachel leaned in close, whispering something
to her. The words weren’t audible.
But Alaric’s assistant, who had studied lip reading in his university years, spoke them aloud
as they played.
He recited them, one by one, in a flat, detached voice.
“Your parents must have been cursed by the Moon Goddess to have died the way they did.”
“I heard they were torn apart by rogues, their bodies left in pieces in the dirt. Fitting,

considering they were nothing but cowards.”
Alaric’s fingers twitched. The next line landed like a dagger to the chest.
“Do you ever wonder what they did to deserve such a gruesome death?”
“Maybe they were traitors. Maybe their deaths were a message.”
Alaric had to force himself to keep watching.
In the video, Mina’s body tensed, her entire form trembling–not with anger, but with
omething much worse—Agony.
Then, before she could react, Rachel suddenly lost her balance. The moment was clear now,
undeniable. She hadn’t been pushed.
She had thrown herself backward. And as she fell, she reached into her pocket and pulled
out a blade, slashing her own thigh.
Alaric watched as himself came into the frame, rage burning in his eyes, as he charged
toward Mina.
As he raised his hand.
As his palm struck her across the face.
As he turned his back on her, leaving her alone, abandoned, in the rogue–infested wild.
