Chapter 23
The head physician, who had been anxiously waiting for a chance to speak, immediately stepped forward.
“Half an hour ago, Miss Mina’s monitors triggered an abnormal alarm. We detected brief but measurable brain activity and a heartbeat–though both quickly subsided.” His voice carried a cautious optimism, but no certainty.
“We are still closely monitoring her condition, and we haven’t reached any definitive conclusions yet. However,” the physician hesitated, “the fact that we detected is a promising
sign.”
Alaric stood motionless for a moment, his mind struggling to process the information. Slowly, he approached Mina’s bedside and took her cold, unmoving hand into his own.
Her face remained as pale and lifeless as before, untouched by the chaos surrounding her.
“What’s the next step?” he asked, his voice hoarse.
A doctor entered the room, holding a tablet. The head physician took it from him and tapped the screen, pulling up a security feed.
“We reviewed the footage from the past few hours to determine what could have triggered
the sudden spike in activity. That’s when we found her.”
Alaric took the tablet, his golden eyes narrowing as he focused on the screen.
The footage showed a slender woman entering Mina’s intensive care unit.
At first, everything seemed normal–the monitors tracked Mina’s vitals steadily, without
issue.
Then–the moment the woman’s hand brushed against Mina’s skin–every single machine
went haywire.

Alarms blared. Red lights flashed. The woman herself jolted back in shock.

Alaric’s grip on the tablet tightened. The cameras had captured her face clearly.
She was a stranger–yet something about her was hauntingly familiar.
“Who is she?” he demanded, his voice laced with suspicion.
His assistant, who had been sifting through records, stepped forward and handed Alaric a
news article.
This month, on the eighteenth, the Alpha of Blackthorn Pack, Kieran, is set to marry his
long–lost mate. The woman in the footage… is his bride.”
Alaric’s breath caught.
Blackthorn Pack.
A name nearly as powerful as his own. Their Alpha, Kieran, had always been a
ghost–elusive, rarely seen at gatherings, uninterested in pack politics. He was the type of leader who stayed in the shadows, watching, calculating.
But three years ago, Kieran had vanished from the public. And now–out of nowhere–he
was resurfacing with a mate?
“This woman–what’s her background?” Alaric’s voice was dangerously low.
The Beta hesitated.
“Her name is Mona,” he began carefully. “She was once an orphan, adopted by the Blackthorn Pack and raised among them. She and Kieran were fated mates… but three years ago, during a trip in the Shadowfang Mountains, she disappeared.”
Alaric’s heart clenched.
“Shadowfang Mountains,” he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper.
The same cursed land where Mina had nearly died.

the Beta continued. “Kieran searched for her for a full year. When he finally found her, she was buried beneath the forest floor. Still intact. Still… untouched by decay.”
Alaric’s hands trembled as he listened.
“When they brought her back, she wasn’t breathing. Every doctor declared her dead, yet her body refused to wither.”
A suffocating silence followed.
“But,” the Beta finally said, voice hushed, “two weeks ago, she suddenly woke up.”
Alaric’s entire body went rigid. His vision blurred at the edges as the room seemed to close
in around him.
It’s the same.
The exact same.
Ն
His wolf snarled in the back of his mind, uneasy–fur bristling with recognition.
“You’re telling me,” Alaric rasped, “that Mona also entered the Shadowfang Mountains? And
when she came out… she was like Mina?”
His assistant nodded, the gravity of the situation finally sinking in.
It wasn’t a coincidence.
The timeline. The circumstances. The way both women had been left in a state between life
and death.
Alaric’s jaw clenched, his claws digging into his palms.
He needed answers. And there was only one who could give them to him.
His voice came out raw, almost desperate.
I want to see her.”
