Chapter 24 Which Hand Do You Want to Lose?
Caroline was startled and turned around.
Why is David back?
At this hour, he should still be at the office.
Standing nearby, Paul hung his head low, avoiding eye contact. In an instant, Caroline understood.
Someone had tipped him off.
“I warned you,” David said in a deep, raspy voice, “not to touch her.” His piercing gaze locked onto Caroline. “Did you take my words as a joke?”
At the sound of David’s arrival, Elizabeth immediately switched from her overbearing attitude to one of feigned fragility.
“Mr. David…” Elizabeth collapsed to the ground, propping herself up with her hands. “I came to see my sister, hoping to clear the air between us. But before I could even speak, she started cursing at me–and then she hit me.”
Tears streamed down her face as she crawled to David’s side, throwing herself into his arms.
“It’s my fault,” she sobbed. “Caroline has every right to be upset. Please don’t blame her, Mr. David.”
Her textbook–perfect performance as a victim left Caroline utterly speechless.
What a shameless act–turning black into white and making herself the victim.
David glanced down at Elizabeth in his arms. His lips tightened as if he wanted to push her away but ultimately restrained himself.
She had, after all, just been “wronged.”
“I only wanted to help you, Mr. David,” Elizabeth said, her voice soft and saccharine. “I didn’t want to
trouble you with everything. I thought I could share some of the burden. But Caroline’s temper is just too much for me to handle…”
David gave a faint “hmm” in response.
Caroline, watching this scene unfold was dumbfounded.
They were embracing?
Elizabeth had managed to cozy up to David this quickly, and he didn’t reject her?
Unbelievable.
These two… A pair of despicable traitors!
No wonder Elizabeth had been so smug, daring to come and cause a scene–she had David’s permission.
“My wrist hurts, Mr. David,” Elizabeth whimpered, holding her hand out to him. “Caroline twisted it.”

David arched a brow. “Should I have her wrist broken to even the score?”

Elizabeth’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction, though she pretended to hesitate. “No, that wouldn’t be right…”
“With me here, no one can bully you, not even Caroline”
At his signal, two bodyguards stepped forward and restrained Caroline, forcing her to stand before him.
David’s gaze was cold and merciless. “Which hand do you want to lose? The left or the right?”
Caroline glared at him. “You’re going to cripple my hand… For her?”
“Yes,” David replied without hesitation. “The fact I’m not taking both is already a mercy.”
Caroline’s fury surged. She wanted nothing more than to spit in his face!
Elizabeth, nestled smugly in David’s arms, watched the scene unfold with glee.
Go on, do it. She was eager for the show.
When Caroline didn’t respond, David turned to Elizabeth. “You pick for her.”
Elizabeth dropped her pretense. “The right hand. That’s the one she uses the most. Without it, she won’t even be able to hold cutlery.”
David gave a curt nod. “You heard her,” he ordered the bodyguards. “Do it.”
“Yes, Mr. David,” one replied, stepping forward.
Paul hesitated, speaking up timidly, “Sir, if Madam Harper and Mr. Richard find out about this, they might…”
“Hmm?” David’s voice sharpened. Too much talking.”
Paul sighed and stepped back, silenced.
What a joke, Caroline thought bitterly, biting her lip. Her own husband was cradling her stepsister while ordering her hand to be destroyed.
She would never let that happen.
Summoning a sudden burst of strength from who–knows–where, Caroline wrenched herself free from the bodyguards!
