Serenity felt a shiver run down her spine as she caught the cynical look in the young man’s eyes. He was the spitting image of Maximus, only much younger. She remembered seeing him once before he was the one who had opened Pandora’s box, setting off chaos and fights everywhere. If he was here now, it couldn’t be for anything good.
“Hello, Lucius! That’s your name, right?” Serenity said, irritated.
“I’d prefer if you called me uncle, because it’s far too forward of you to use my first name when we don’t even know each other,” Lucius replied coolly.
“What do you want? As far as I know, there’s nothing for us to talk about.”
“Oh, there is. I need you to come for a ride with me.”
“Well, I need a lot of things, but you’re not going to give them to me.”
“This isn’t up for discussion. Get in!” Lucius said, grabbing her wrist and leaning close to whisper in her ear. Serenity glanced around frantically, but there was no one in sight. It was far too early in the morning. Maximus would show up, but not for at least another half hour. Her breathing quickened, and she was just about to scream. “If you scream, I’ll kill you right here,” Lucius said, almost as if he could read her mind.
Serenity had no choice but to get into the young man’s sleek car. Her hands trembled. She didn’t know what he was capable of, but the look in his eyes told her it wasn’t anything good. How could this man now be presenting, himself as her uncle, just like that, as if nothing had happened?
“I’m sorry for scaring you like this, but I have no choice. Either you come with me willingly, or someone else will come to get you–and trust me, it won’t be pleasant.”
Π
“I don’t know what you want from me. I don’t even know you! We’ve only crossed paths once, and now I’m already having problems with you,” Serenity said seriously, though cautiously.
“My father wants to meet you. We know full well you wouldn’t come on your own, but he wants to talk to you. Palmer to Palmer.”
Serenity was stunned. His father–her grandfather–wanted to meet her? What could a man like that possibly want with her?
Meanwhile, Maximus arrived and noticed Serenity’s car parked nearby. Something felt off when he saw the door slightly ajar, but before he could do anything, his phone rang.
“Mr. Maximus? Maximus Palmer?”
“Yes, speaking.”
“We’ve been trying to reach you since this morning. It’s about your wife.”
“My wife and I are separated. I’m not with her right now.
“Yes, sir, I’m aware. I’m calling from the Metropolitan Health Authority. Your wife was in a serious accident, and she’s currently in the ICU. Her parents are already here, but we need your authorization for several procedures. Unfortunately, I can’t give you more details over the phone It’s important that you come in to hear the doctor’s recommendations and the prognosis.”
“You’re joking, right? Tell me, how much is my wife paying you to fake a doctor’s voice?”

“Sir, we are respectable professionals. We don’t engage in such games. I’ve told you where your wife is. If you don’t believe me, investigate it yourself, and if it’s true, come to us immediately.”
Maximus found himself in a dilemma. Serenity had asked to speak with him, but now he couldn’t see her anywhere. And now Alexia–who, supposedly, had claimed she wouldn’t harm herself–was in the hospital. What on earth had happened?
Without leaving the university, he called his house and asked his housekeeper, “Martina, is the missus at home?” Maximus’s voice betrayed a hint of worry.
