“Maximus, their lives–and mine–are fine as they are. I don’t want to bring chaos into their world. That’s why it worries me so much. Who could possibly be looking into me?”
‘Bro dear, I just want to know more about you. I want you to meet my kids. They’re right over there, look. The two boys and the girl standing by the school gate.”
From Peter’s truck, Maximus pointed toward his children just as he noticed the young man walking with Laura gently caressing her cheek. The tender gesture didn’t go unnoticed by either man. Peter raised an eyebrow and said:
“Is that your daughter’s boyfriend?” he asked with curiosity.
“No! At least, I hope not!” Maximus replied, clearly annoyed.
“It seems you’ve got more pressing problems than my life. Maybe you should focus on those,” Peter said with a hint of irony.
“Peter!” Maximus snapped, raising his voice.
“I’m a man, Maximus. I can see that boy’s intentions with my niece. Your daughter is beautiful–remember how we were at that age? We were both heartbreakers. That kid reminds me of us. Be careful!”
“Peter, how can you even remember that? I thought you said you don’t remember anything ab
thing about your past.
“That’s how it sounded, huh?” Peter smirked. “I know who I am, Maximus. I’m not an idiot. When I realized I couldn’t remember anything, I had myself investigated. I know everything about my past. But I don’t need to be a genius to see that kid’s intentions. Welcome to adolescence I’ve been through this already, and my son ended up with a child of his own. Of everything that happened, though, it turned out to be one of the best things in my life. But back to the topic–it’s time for you to have the talk with your daughter.”
Maximus stared at his brother in disbelief. He couldn’t believe what Peter was suggesting. He remembered Alden Peter’s son–a 23–year–old who once mentioned having a child. But Alden had never said how old the child was.
“How old is your grandson?” Maximus asked, still processing.
“He’s five, almost six. Alden was 18 and Grace was 16 when she got pregnant. That’s why I’m telling you–it’s time to talk to your daughter about sex.”
“How am I supposed to talk to her about that? She’s just a little girl!”
“She sure doesn’t look like one,” Peter said, hodding toward Laura and Adrian.
At the school gate, Laura and Adrian were exchanging glances filled with a new sense of complicity,
“Well, if you don’t want to accept that your daughter is already a young woman, be prepared for the consequences. She needs guidance because there’s no shortage of boys like him out there. Anyway, I have to pick up my grandson–it’s late, and he’s waiting for me, Give me your phone. I’ll call myself and send you my number later. I live in a central house in Westhaven, a white one. You’ll find it easily.”
Maximus reluctantly handed over his phone, and Peter took it, dialing a number and then returning it.
“There. You’ve got my number now. Use it sparingly–I don’t want calls from you every day. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to get my boy.”
The two brothers stepped out of the truck and began walking toward the school gate, unaware that someone had been watching them from a distance. The observer discreetly snapped photos of the pair.
