Every second she delayed gave her a slim chance of escape.
Jason hesitated, but Sam, ever the realist, shook his head. “Jason, you know we can’t just abandon the plan. We’ve got rules.”

“The deposit has already been paid, and the rest will be transferred once the job is done. We can’t be sure if Mrs. Ellison is telling the truth–don’t let her fool you. She might even be setting us up.”
The two exchanged a glance and decided to stick with their original plan.
They stepped closer to Caroline.
She scooted back desperately. “You’re seriously going to settle for 700,000 dollars and give up 7,000,000 dollars?”
“Shut up, you wretched woman,” Jason growled, slapping her hard across the face. “Do you really think we’d trust you? Even if we took your money, we might not live to spend it.”
The blow sent Caroline’s head spinning, her ears ringing, and her vision blurring.
Before she could react, Sam grabbed her shoulders, yanking at her clothes.
Her pale shoulders became exposed, and her blouse slipped further open.
Sam turned to Jason. “Who’s going first?”
Jason grinned wickedly. “Why not both of us together?”
“Ha! By the time we’re done, the baby won’t survive. Pregnant women can’t take this kind of thing.”
“Exactly,” Jason agreed, his expression twisted with excitement. “We get the job done and enjoy ourselves a win–win.”
“Let’s finish this,” Sam said.
Caroline fought desperately, her back pinned against the wall, her hair in a wild mess. She screamed with every ounce of strength she had left. “Stay away from me! Don’t touch me! Get away, you disgusting monsters!”

Her voice cracked, but it was in vain.
Hopelessness engulfed her.
She had fought so hard, but was this really how it would end?

“Help! Somebody help!” Caroline screamed desperately. “If you dare hurt me, I swear you’ll regret it!”
“Shut your mouth!” Another slap came hard, slamming her head into the wall with a loud thud.
Jason reached for her, but Caroline twisted away and bit into his hand viciously.
“Ah! Damn it, she bit me!”
Caroline refused to let go, the metallic taste of blood filling her mouth as she clamped down harder.
“Quick, pull her off! My hand–she’s tearing it apart!” Jason howled.
Sam pried her jaws open, forcing her to release.
Blood stained her lips, making her appearance even more chilling.
“No point in holding back–finish this quickly,” Sam said. “We’ve wasted too much time already, and things could get complicated.”
“Agreed.”
Caroline was shoved to the floor.
Shame and despair washed over her, and for the first time, she thought of ending her own life.
What was the point of going on? Why keep living? It was exhausting.
Better to end things herself than suffer this humiliation and the loss of her child.
“David… David…” she whispered weakly. “If you don’t come now, we’ll never meet again. Maybe… maybe you don’t even care. If I die, at least you won’t have to explain anything to Harper.”
Her energy faded, and she stopped struggling.
Someone, anyone, please save me. Or… should I just end it here?
Her teeth pressed against her tongue.
Her dazed eyes drifted past Jason, and she thought she saw David’s cold, striking face.
