The two sisters spent the rest of the morning talking and nibbling on snacks until they both dozed off. Meanwhile, Maximus managed to get a few hours of rest. He was finally awakened when Matthew informed him that Alden had arrived. Groggy but alert, Maximus got up, changed out of his sleepwear, and put on something more casual yet presentable.
By the time he joined Alden, his nephew was sitting in the living room with Matthew, sipping coffee. Matthew had already given Alden a brief summary of the situation but left the details for Maximus to explain.
“Alden, son, it’s good to see you,” Maximus said, walking into the room.
“Uncle, Matthew’s filled me in on some of it, but I need to hear your thoughts. What do you think we should do?” Alden asked, his tone serious.
“I’m afraid, Alden, that we need to step away from the company,” Maximus began, his voice heavy. “I know it’s hard to hear, and I know it’s not what you want to do. You’ve put so much effort into making the company succeed. But if my father returns, he’ll take it from us. I’m certain of it. He’s been too quiet, and that’s not like him. He’s a calculating man, and his silence is a strategy. He’s likely waiting for the company to reach its peak before swooping in and taking it from us.”
“What are you going to do?” Alden asked, frowning.
“If he wants the company so badly, we’ll give it to him,” Maximus said calmly.
“What?!” Alden nearly spilled his coffee.
“Yes, we’ll let him have it. But Marcus will handle the rest he’ll make sure my father doesn’t get away with it.”
“I don’t understand what you’re proposing,” Alden replied, shaking his head in confusion.
“I need to talk to Marcus first,” Maximus explained. “But can assure you, my father won’t walk away with your ideas and hard work.”
“I don’t see how that’s possible. We’ve invested so much time and money into Palmer Group, and now you’re telling me to just let it go?
“Yes, Alden. For your sake and for Ethan’s,” Maximus said firmly.

The conversation between Alden and Maximus lasted a long time. Maximus laid out the plan, emphasizing that everything depended on Marcus playing his part. It was a risky move, but Maximus believed it was the only way ensure their efforts wouldn’t be in vain. However, given recent events, Maximus wasn’t entirely confident Marcus would cooperate.
When they finally checked the time, it was already lunchtime. Maximus invited Alden to stay for the meal. Before heading to the dining room, he went to Laura’s room to check on her, only to find a surprising sight: both Laura and Serenity were curled up, fast asleep on the bed.
Maximus chuckled softly, then stepped into the room. The sound of his footsteps stirred Laura, who woke up. first, followed by Serenity. Both girls looked up at him groggily, their sleepy eyes tugging at Maximus’s heartstrings.

“Sure, Dad,” Laura replied with a sleepy smile. “I haven’t spent much time with Alden, but he’s a nice guy, Serenity. You’ll like him.”
Serenity nodded but didn’t reply immediately. She had met Alden once before, under stressful circumstances. At the time, she’d been too frightened to get a proper impression of him. The man she remembered had struck her as odd–almost unsettlingly so. But perhaps this time, she’d finally get to know him properly.
