Chapter 41
Early the next morning at the hospital, Gloria, Mr. and Mrs. Clemons and other family members of the Clemon family were at the hospital after they received the news that the Patriarch was awake.
Currently they were all waiting outside the ward as the doctor’s checked up on him. Gloria looked around and didn’t notice Nathan so she turned to Mrs. Clemon and asked “Aunt, why is Nathan not her yet?” It has been more than an hour since Mrs. Clemon called Nathan and the latter said he would be here. But till now he wasn’t here yet.
Mrs. Clemon smiled at Gloria and said. “Maybe he is caught up with something. Don’t worry he would be here
soon.”
“Okay Aunt.” Gloria said sweetly.
At the same time footsteps was heard as someone was walking towards the corridor. Mrs. Clemon turned and noticed her son. “Here he is.” She pointed behind Gloria.
Gloria turned only to see Nathan who was in high spirit walk towards them. She frowned. What happened to Nathan today that he looks all happy.
Nathan who barely made his expression none today smiled when he looked at his mom. “Mom, how are you feeling and what about grandpa?”
Mrs. Clemon was also shocked by Nathan’s attitude today but thinking about it, to her, it was because the Patriarch was awake so she didn’t think too much into it. “In good son. The doctors are doing some check up on him so we are still waiting.”
With that said he turned and looked at Gloria with an icy gade.
Gloria shuddered at his gaze. She knew why he was looking at her like that but she told her self not to be scared. She also stared back at him with the thought in mind. ‘I would not go back to Y country anytime soon. Dream on if you think this would make me leave.”
As Mr. Clemon felt the tension around them he coughed lightly and pulled Nathan to one side and asked about the company. “How are things in the company?”
“Everything is going smoothly dad, you don’t have to worry” Nathan replied calmly.
“You know that now that your grandfather isn’t well, your uncle would be creating a fuss in the company to be part of the board of directors. You got to be careful.” Mr. Clemon warned Nathan.
“You don’t have to worry about that dad. I got everything under control.
“If you say so then okay. How about you and Gloria? How are things between you two?” Mr. Clemmon asked.
Nathan’s gaze darkened when he heard Gloria’s name. “Dad, there is nothing between Gloria and I. We are just friends now.” Nathan tried to sound calmly but Mr. Nathan noticed it when his
gaze darkened.
“Son, you know you and Gloria would have been married by now if not for what happened…”
Nathan didn’t wait for his dad to finish before cutting him off. “If not for what happened, yes we would have been married. But now that it happened, there is nothing that could get us married again.”
Mr. Clemon sighed. “Son, you shouldn’t be…”
‘Dad, we should talk about something else.” As soon as Nathan finish speaking, the doctor came out of the Patriarch’s ward. They Clemon family members all hurried to him.
“How is he?” Mr. Clemon asked.

“For
now
he is up but doesn’t have enough time left. He needs to undergo induction.”
“And what’s that doctor?” Mr. Clemon asked.
“Induction is a stage of treatment which would be carried out in the hospital by a specialized doctor.” The doctor then went on. “This is because he would probably need to have regular blood transfusions as it’s likely that his blood does not contain enough healthy blood cells.”
“He would also be vulnerable to infection, so it is very important that he is in a sterile environment where his health can be carefully monitored and any infection that he might have can be promptly treated.”
“For now, I have prescribed some antibiotics to help prevent further infection till the specialized doctor appears. He would be able to dive deep into his illness with you when he comes.”
“So you mean there is no hope even with treatment?” One of the members of the Clemon Family asked.
The doctor shook his head. “He may live just for a couple of month with the treatment but without the treatment, I’m afraid…”
They all understood what the doctor said. There was no hope even with the treatment he had just a few months to live.
“Can we see him now?” Nathan asked.
“Yes you may go in now.” The doctor replied and walked away.
Mr. and Mrs. Clemons entered with Nathan and Gloria following suite. Nathan uncle, Mr. Richard Clemon also joined and entered the ward with his son Joey Clemon.
When they entered, the old man was looking out of the window as he lay pale on the bed. He looked underweight and a little older as thought he had aged over night. His skin looked sagged and his bones were protruding, offering knobbiness and sharp angles that made him appear frail and weak. His hair was thin and lackluster, and his eyes had a pinpoint look to them, which looked glass bright and dull. His completion was pale and waxy, with almost a greasy look to it.
Nathan went over to him with a sad glint in his eyes. “Grandpa..”
“Hmm” He turned and stared at Nathan. He smiled and called out. “My grandson.”
“Grandpa, how are you feeling?” Nathan asked.
“I’m okay my dear grandson. What could possibly be wrong with me?”
“Grandpa I’m sorry.” Nathan said with a breaking voice.
“What do you mean by that? I’m already old so it was expected.”
“No grandpa. I didn’t take very good care of you.” As Nathan was talking to his grandpa, Mr. Richard also signaled for his son to also join the conversation. Getting the signal, he walked over to the Patriarch’s bed. “Grandpa, I am also an unfilial grandson. I also didn’t take very good care of you.”
The Patriarch shook his head. “It’s okay. You should all stop looking at me like I would die soon. I am going to live.
Mr. Damian Clemon sighed.
Gloria then decided to make her presence known. She went over to his bed and said. “Grandpa, I know you would get through this. My grandfather sends his regards. He said you should get better soon so you two play chess again sometime soon.”

The Patriarch smiled after hearing that. “Tell him I definitely would.” He then looked at Gloria and then Nathan and sighed.
He turned to Gloria and asked. “When are you going back to Y country my dear?
Gloria was shocked by the sudden question by the Patriarch. She thought, why is he asking when I would be going back? Does he also want me to leave this country too? No it can’t be. He promised my grandpa I would get married to Nathan. “Not anytime soon grandpa. I would wait till you are better before leaving. And I also have a business to settle here before leaving.”
“Okay my dear.”
After chatting with each one of them, he asked them to excuse him as he wanted to take a nap asking only Nathan to stay.
Nathan already had a fair idea about why his grandpa wanted him to stay.
After everyone excited the room, he turned to Nathan. “Nate, how are things between you and Gloria now?”
Nathan’s gaze darkened as he already had a fair idea about what his grandpa wanted. His grandpa always thought Gloria is the best woman to be his wife. But after what Nathan saw that time, he was sure to believe it was a façade that Gloria was putting on. Thinking about that year he sighed and looked at his grandpa.
