Chapter 122 A Family’s Strife
David spoke calmly, “No.”
“So, you’re saying that if you’re not with Caroline, there’s no one else in your heart?” Harper asked.
For a fleeting moment, the image of Elizabeth crossed David’s mind. But it lasted only a second.
Marry Elizabeth?
He had made a promise, and he would keep it.
But marrying her had nothing to do with love or affection. It was merely a matter of repayment and responsibility.
“I don’t have anyone I like, nor anyone I must marry,” David replied. “Mom, if you have something to say, just say it directly.”
Harper nodded. “What I mean is, since there’s no one in your heart, why not try to get along with Caroline? Over time, I believe you’ll come to love her. She’s kind, strong, and independent–an excellent choice for a wife.”
David let out a cold laugh. Why did everyone keep insisting me to love Caroline? I wish I could destroy her!
“You’ll slowly see Caroline’s good qualities, truly,” Harper said. “She’s the daughter–in–law I recognize from the bottom of my heart and my lifesaver. Without her, I wouldn’t be standing here today. Years ago, she risked her own life to jump into the water to save me. I owe her a debt I can never repay. David, I’ve never asked you for anything before. I’ve only ever hoped for your health and safety. But this time, consider it my plea. Please treat Caroline well. She’s endured so much, and I hope she can find happiness in the Ellison family.”
Harper rambled on, and David listened with patience, though her words went in one ear and out the other
He instructed the driver to take Harper back to the residence, then pushed open the door to the hospital
room.
Caroline was in a deep sleep, her eyelashes still glistening with tears. Dried blood remained on her lips, and her hand–fingers all broken–rested motionless beside her pillow.
If this had been before, seeing her like this might have softened David’s heart, even just a little.
But now? She deserved it.
She didn’t deserve a shred of kindness from him. She deserved nothing but contempt, torment, and endless suffering.
David’s voice was cold. “Take her back to the Ellison residence.”
“But madam is still asleep…
Do you not understand what I said?”
Understood, Mr. Ellison.”

ruthlessness. No one noticed the pair of eyes silently watching everything from the shadows.
Elizabeth stood hidden behind the door, clenching her fists as she watched the bodyguards wheel Caroline’s hospital bed out of the room.

She had thought this time her plan was foolproof. Surely, with Mr. Ellison taking action, he would decisively get rid of Caroline’s child. But who could have expected Harper to stand up for Caroline? That wretched Caroline! How could her luck always be so good? Victory has been so close.
“I sacrificed so much,” Elizabeth muttered, glaring at her still–damp clothes. “I begged for mercy in the pouring rain, crying and shouting until my voice was hoarse, soaked to the skin, hoping to crush Caroline completely this time. And yet… she walks away unscathed!”
Her frustration was palpable.
“This is killing eight hundred enemies at the cost of a thousand of my own. Hmph. Just wait. This is only the beginning. I refuse to believe Mr. Ellison can tolerate Caroline’s illegitimate child. Ha, illegitimate child. Although, that child is actually Mr. Ellison’s. A family’s strife… a tiger devouring its cub–there’s a certain irony to it. Even if I lose in the end, there’s always Mr. Ellison and Caroline’s child to drag down with me. As if I would lose.”
