Caroline remained in a deep ninety–degree bow for a full thirty seconds. Her back ached, her vision darkened and swam with dizziness, and only then did she slowly straighten up.
The moment she stood tall, David’s sharp voice rang out. “Did I say you could stand?”
“I…”
“Look at what you’ve created!”
Before his words fully registered, David raised his hand and flung the remaining toner from the bottle directly onto Caroline’s face.
Caroline was caught completely off guard, utterly unprepared. The liquid contained alcohol.
Her eyes stung fiercely, burning so much that she couldn’t open them for a while. Her nose was overwhelmed by the sharp, acrid smell.
But to Caroline, the physical discomfort wasn’t the worst part.
She could endure this, David had done far worse to her before.
What hurt more was the humiliation. This was in the company, in front of so many people, and he had left her no dignity at all.
In public, she had no respect. In private… she had even less.
“Caroline!”
Anna gasped in shock and moved as if to rush forward, but Caroline quickly raised a hand to stop her. “Don’t come closer.”
Caroline wiped her face with a hand, blinking furiously to ease the stinging and blurry vision, then turned her gaze to David.
Her eyes seemed to be veiled with a faint mist, and when she looked at him, his figure doubled.
“Have you calmed down, Mr. Ellison?” Caroline asked. “If not, feel free to throw more.”
She picked up a bottle of water from the table beside her and handed it to him.
David didn’t take it.
Seeing this, Caroline unscrewed the cap. “I understand. No need to trouble Mr. Ellison to act personally–I’ll handle it myself.”
She tipped the bottle, pouring the water over her own head. Only by doing this could she hope to satisfy David and bring this farce to an end.
Otherwise… who knows what might come next?
David wanted to see her humiliated, to strip away every shred of her dignity.
Fine. I will oblige him!

“Wait, wait, what are you doing?” Suddenly, Boris strode over, grabbing the water bottle from her hands. “We haven’t even figured out the truth yet. Caroline, there’s no need to shoulder all the blame.”
“Mr. Boris…”
She hadn’t expected him to come to her aid at this moment. He wasn’t just her boss–he was her mentor and benefactor.
Boris turned to Caroline and said, “Go to the lab and test the product. See if, besides the alcohol, any other substances were added.”
Then, he looked at David. “This issue happened in my department. I’ll take responsibility for handling it.”
David glanced at Boris coldly. The punishment for Caroline had barely started. He wasn’t done yet, and now Boris had stepped in to diffuse the situation.
Why does Boris trust Caroline so much? What is it about this woman that made every man around her seem willing to help her unconditionally? Even I have nearly been fooled by her, nearly softened toward her!
If not for Elizabeth exposing her pregnancy, David feared he might have actually fallen for her.
“Mr. Ellison, leave it to me,” Boris said smoothly. “This is a minor issue. No need to trouble you further.”
He shot Caroline a look, silently urging her to leave.
Caroline didn’t move.
She knew that if David wasn’t satisfied, even if she avoided trouble now, she would face worse consequences
later.
Anna, however, grabbed her by the arm. “Let’s go, Caroline. Thank goodness for Mr. Boris…”
Caroline looked directly at David, her expression calm as she asked, “Mr. Ellison, do you have any further instructions?”
“Yes.”
“Please, go ahead.”
David spat out a single word. “Leave!”
“Understood.”
