No one knew how much time had passed when the sound of approaching footsteps echoed in Caroline’s
cars.
At first, Caroline thought she was hallucinating… Who would come near her in the middle of the night? Who would even dare?
Yet, the footsteps grew closer and finally stopped right in front of her.
A pair of spotless, polished men’s handcrafted leather shoes came into view.
“Da… David…”
Caroline’s gaze slowly moved upward–from the shoes to the tailored trousers, up to the crisp shirt, and finally, to that strikingly handsome face.
He was undeniably good–looking, with features as though sculpted to perfection, sharply defined. But those thin lips…
Men with thin lips were known to be the most heartless.
“Do you realize your mistake now?” His deep voice cut through the night, sounding especially cold.
He stared at her bruised and battered figure, his eyes devoid of any pity or softness.
To him, she deserved this.
If she had only chosen to yield, to admit fault, and willingly abort the child, she could have been spared all -this suffering.
But she refused.
So, Caroline, suffer well!
“Mistake?” Caroline chuckled, her pale lips trembling. “I did nothing wrong.”
“You’re still this stubborn.”
Straightening up on her knees, Caroline smiled even more, “If I have to admit to a mistake… my biggest one was marrying you.”
“You always say the things I hate to hear most.”
Caroline replied calmly, “You know, David, I’m just an orphan, an adopted daughter. If I didn’t marry you, the Brooks family would’ve married me off to some other wealthy man, maybe even forced me to be someone’s hidden mistress. As long as it benefited the Brooks family, they wouldn’t care.”
“So when the Brooks family agreed to the Ellison family marriage, I actually felt relieved.”
“Because I thought, no matter what, being a widow would be better than serving men. I’d be free and live however I wanted. I thought, for once, fate was finally being kind to me. But I was wrong… Marrying you is worse than being an old man’s concubine.”
David narrowed his eyes. “Caroline, after everything, you still don’t know how to submit?”

She dared to say he was worse than some old man.
Even now, she continued to provoke him!

“Things are already like this. What does it matter anymore?” Caroline stared at him. “You came to see how miserable I am, didn’t you? Well, now that you’ve seen it, you can leave.”
But David suddenly bent his knee and crouched down.
He reached out and lifted her chin, slowly moving closer.
The night was deep, but under the moonlight and the streetlamps, he could clearly see the injuries on her face.
Long, deep bruises–blue, purple, and severely swollen.
“I can make you suffer even more.” David’s lips curled into a faint, careless smile. “But at the same time, I can also make you live in unmatched luxury and comfort. Which will you choose?”
Caroline smiled too. “I’ll choose whichever lets me keep my child.”
“Then you’ve chosen more suffering.”
“So be it. At least it’s my choice.” Caroline’s voice was steady. “David, a cold–blooded man like you will never receive genuine affection.”
His expression darkened. “Save me the lecture. I’ll ask you one last time–are you going to abort the child or not?”
Caroline enunciated each word clearly: “I. Will. Not.”
David’s hand swung violently, shoving her aside as he stood up abruptly.
She was already weak. That forceful push sent her collapsing to the ground, her forehead slamming hard against the floor with a dull thud.
Then, for a long, long time…
Caroline didn’t move..
