Chapter 156 On His Lap
The jacket covered only her upper body, leaving the dress to sculpt her slender waist and accentuate the elegant curve of her hips. Below the hem, her long, fair legs remained fully exposed. They were impossible to ignore.
David strode ahead with effortless confidence, while Caroline had to quicken her steps to keep pace.
At last, he halted before a private dining room.
With one hand, he pushed the door open, and with the other, he seized her waist, pulling her into his embrace with a grip that left no room for defiance.
The instant the door swung open, the lively hum of conversation spilled out.
But the moment David stepped inside, the chatter momentarily died, only to be replaced by waves of eager flattery.
“Mr. Ellison, please, have a seat!”
“We’ve been waiting for you! No one dared to start without you.”
“With your presence, this private room feels all the more distinguished.”
David’s expression remained indifferent, yet a faint, unreadable smirk played at the corner of his lips.
He walked directly to the head seat and sat down. However, both sides of his chair were already occupied.
Caroline hesitated. Where am I supposed to sit?
If there was no space beside him, then surely she could take a seat farther away. For her, that would be ideal.
Just as that thought crossed her mind, a firm grip tightened around her waist.
Before she could react, David pulled her down, directly onto his lap.
“What are you standing there spacing out for?” he murmured.
Caroline stiffened, her breath catching as she found herself face–to–face with his chiseled features,
In front of all these people, he had placed her on his lap.
What is he thinking? Is this some kind of public display of affection? That’s impossible. He loathes me. He’d sooner wring my neck than pretend to show any tenderness in front of everyone.
For a moment, she couldn’t make sense of his intentions.
After a stunned pause, she finally spoke. “I was just wondering where I should sit.”
“Right here.”
Are you sure?”

Caroline blinked, uncertain.
“I said, I’m thirsty.” He repeated himself, his tone deliberate. “Didn’t you hear me?”
Of course, she had heard him.
Is he ordering me to serve him a drink with so many eyes watching?

The private room fell into silence. No one dared to speak. At this table, David’s authority was absolute.
Lowering her gaze, Caroline reached for the glass and brought it to his lips.
She had no idea what game he was playing, but such a trivial act was meaningless to her. If this was what he wanted, she would oblige.
Her only concern was that this was merely the beginning, and far worse was yet to come.
David took a slow sip, his smirk deepening. “Not bad.”
A voice immediately chimed in, eager to please. “Of course! Mr. Ellison, we wouldn’t dare serve anything but the finest. If you enjoy it, I can have some delivered to the Ellison residence tomorrow. What do you think?”
David didn’t respond. Instead, he turned his attention to Caroline.
“Give it a try too.”
Obediently, she nodded, taking the very glass he had just drunk from and pressing it to her lips.
The rich, earthy aroma of tea filled her senses. Indeed, it was high–quality chamomile.
“Well, how is it?” he asked.
Caroline answered evenly, “It’s premium chamomile.”
“Do you like it?”
A flicker of unease passed through her.
Why is he asking if I like it? What is he getting at?
From the moment they had entered this room, David’s behavior had been completely unpredictable.
She had no idea what he was planning.
