David asked, “If I had been two minutes late and the baby was gone, what would you have done?”
“You already know… what I would have done.”
He lifted his gaze to hers, their eyes locking in the dimly lit space.
In the silence, they could hear each other’s quiet breaths.
Caroline suddenly raised her hand, hooking her arms around David’s neck. She clung to his shoulders and spoke softly, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’ll say it again. As long as the baby lives, I live. If the baby dies, I die.”
Then, now, and forever–he can dream if he thinks he’ll ever take my child away.
His arm tightened around her waist, pulling her closer.
A low chuckle rumbled from his chest. “Caroline, let’s change the game.”
“Game?”
She blinked, her lips curling into a silent, bitter smile.
I’m struggling to survive, fighting with everything I have. It’s exhausting, miserable, and agonizing. But to David…
It’s just a game. A leisurely game for him to enjoy watching me flail, watching me suffer in the palm of his hand. How amusing.
Once again, Caroline was struck by the vast chasm between them.
She couldn’t even control her own fate.

“You’re right,” David murmured. “This game is getting dull.”
He smirked. “Don’t worry, I won’t let you die. If you died… what fun would that be?”
“You-”
His fingertip pressed lightly against her lips. “Shh. Just play along, Caroline. You’re getting more interesting by the day.”
David slowly released her, reaching up to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear. His touch was soft, almost tender.
But all Caroline felt was an unbearable chill.
A suffocating cold seeped into her bones, wrapping around her like a curse.
After tonight… how will he decide to play next? What will become of me?
She wanted to say something, but David had already pulled away, slipping out of the passenger seat and

She watched as he walked around the front of the car, his movements fluid and composed.
Then he slid into the driver’s seat and started the engine.
David did everything with effortless grace. Calm. Poised. Untouched by uncertainty.
It’s like nothing and no one has ever shaken him. Like he’s incapable of losing control.
“David,” Caroline called his name.
“Hmm?”
“Have you ever broken down?” she asked. “Ever felt truly hopeless? Like you were completely powerless, crushed by something so devastating you couldn’t do a thing about it?”
His answer came without hesitation. “No.”
“That’s a shame.” Caroline let out a quiet laugh. “Your life has been too smooth. No ups and downs. I hope one day, you get to experience that feeling.”
David chuckled as well. “I won’t. There’s nothing in this world that could make me feel that way.”
“Oh, you will.” Caroline’s voice was slow and deliberate, laced with certainty. “Maybe not long from now, you’ll meet someone who makes you feel it. Someone who drags you from heaven to hell, gives you everything, then rips it all away… and you’ll never, ever be able to get her back. You’ll be powerless. Destroyed. Like your heart’s been ripped out.”
Just the thought of it makes me feel better.
Let there be someone who can control David–just like he controls everyone else.
David drove with one hand resting lazily on the steering wheel. “Someone like that, huh? And who would that be?”
