David suddenly curled his lips into a smirk. Leaning on the dining table with one hand, he bent down and moved closer to her. “What if I told you… I’m finally taking this seriously?”
Caroline frowned slightly and said, “Seriously? You mean… you’re playing with me more seriously than before?”
“I mean, I’m serious about you,” David clarified.
Caroline blinked, her clear eyes reflecting innocence, like a still spring of water.
His words weren’t hard to understand.
When a man tells a woman he’s serious about her, what does that mean? It means he values the relationship. He wants it to blossom, to last, to be forever.
That was Caroline’s first thought too. But she didn’t believe it. Not even for a second.
David? Taking her seriously? Taking this marriage seriously? Ridiculous.
She turned her head and looked out the window. The world still turned as usual–nothing had changed.
Her life was the same as before. No difference.
The only thing that had changed… was that things would get even worse for her. Harder. More unbearable.
Seeing that Caroline remained silent, David felt his heart sink once again. Just when he was secretly hoping for her response, she said nothing.
Someone as proud as David would never ask twice.
Last night, she claimed she didn’t hear him. Just now, she pretended not to understand. She was really pushing it!
With a cold huff, he turned and walked away, his leather shoes clicking crisply against the polished marble floor.
Caroline continued eating. But a few minutes later, David suddenly came back.
This time, he was walking backward, step by step, moving away from the dining room while keeping his eyes on her.
What is he doing?
“David, you’re home?” Harper’s voice rang out. “At this hour, I thought you’d already left for the office. Is Caroline home too?” I brought you both some things again. Soon, Harper appeared at the dining room entrance.

She was pregnant. And yet, she had lost weight. For a moment, David felt something strange. Was that… heartache? I am feeling sorry for her?
His expression hardened almost instantly.
She brought this on herself. If she were carrying his child, she’d be treated like royalty–pampered and cherished beyond imagination.
Harper walked over and asked with concern, “Caroline, are you trying to lose weight? Your figure is already great. Any thinner, and you’ll lose your looks. Besides, you and David are trying for a baby–you should focus on nutrition.”
Caroline let out a dry chuckle, unsure how to respond.
