She was nearing the gates, her back straight, her pace unwavering. Small and insignificant as she seemed against the grand estate, there was an undeniable resilience in her posture.
“Elizabeth,” he said, a smirk barely touching his lips, “it’s not that I don’t know the truth. I simply never found it worth my time to expose you. It’s not that you’re clever enough to hide it, it’s that I never cared to call you out.”
Elizabeth couldn’t fully decipher the layers beneath his words. A chill crept down her spine, and she dared not speak.
“But you and the Brooks family,” David’s voice hardened, “have crossed the line.”
In the past, he had turned a blind eye, unwilling to meddle in the Brooks family’s affairs.
Caroline’s suffering had been their crime, not his burden.
