“You like Caroline, don’t you? You’ve fallen for her.” Elizabeth’s voice trembled. “Mr. Ellison, you want to protect her now. You’ll get rid of everything she hates, including me, right?”
David didn’t answer. Yet in his heart, the truth echoed over and over. Yes, he loved Caroline.
Loving someone began with wanting to protect them, and he wanted to protect Caroline for a lifetime.
David wanted to shield her from all the pain and suffering.
This realization had come suddenly, catching him off guard. But in reality, the feelings had long since taken root. He had simply been too slow to recognize them, too stubborn to admit them, until now.
Seeing his silence, Elizabeth felt a cold dread settle over her. This is bad. Mr. Ellison isn’t denying it.
“Then what about me?” she panicked. “Mr. Ellison, what am I to you now? Are you just going to abandon me?”
David’s gaze was calm as he asked, “What is it that you want?”
“What do I want?”
“Yes,” he said. “Money or something else? Whatever it is, I can give it to you.”
He was drawing a line.
Elizabeth wasn’t foolish. There was no way she would accept that.
“I don’t want anything. I only want you, Mr. Ellison,” she blurted. “I love you. I love you more than Caroline ever could! I’ve always been devoted to you, what use do I have for money? It means nothing to me!”
David’s frown deepened.
Between him and Elizabeth, there was still that one night between them.
It wasn’t something that could be explained away in a few words, nor was it a bond that could be severed overnight.
He would take his time. This wasn’t something that could be resolved immediately.
But one thing was certain that he wouldn’t wrong Elizabeth, and he would never abandon Caroline.
“Go home first,” David said as he strode toward the Rolls–Royce. “We’ll talk later.”
“Mr. Ellison…”
Elizabeth reached for him, but her fingers only brushed against the fabric of his coat before it slipped from
her grasp.
She caught nothing.
It felt like a dreadful omen, a warning she couldn’t ignore. Soon, she feared that David would slip

The day David and Caroline had arrived at the Brooks residence, Caroline had been wrapped in Mr. Ellison’s coat, the marks on her collarbone unmistakable. Even then, Elizabeth had felt dread settle in her
chest.
Now, everything was moving in the very direction she feared most.
David had not only given her a severe warning but was also offering her compensation, as if tying up loose ends from that night.
And after that, he was preparing to stay by Caroline’s side forever.
The car disappeared from Elizabeth’s sight.
At the bus stop, Caroline checked the time, then glanced at the empty road.
The bus still hadn’t arrived, and she needed to get to work.
She decided maybe she should walk ahead. There was an intersection up ahead, a busier area, she might be able to catch a cab there.
“I don’t even know why I stayed at the Ellison residence… A working–class nobody like me living in a place like that? Surrounded by mansions, completely deserted, not a hint of real life. I can’t even hail a cab properly,” she muttered, resigning herself to walking.
Just then, a car horn sounded behind her.

Caroline instinctively stepped aside.

The honking came again, more insistent this time.
She frowned. What the hell? I’m walking on the sidewalk. Cars aren’t even allowed up here! Why is someone honking
at me?
