“No, it wasn’t mel Elizabeth denied immediately. “How could I do something like that? I don’t even have the ability! Mr. Ellison, you can’t accuse me unfairly!”

“I… I saw you were drunk, so I wanted to take care of you, and then… then….”
David’s deep, piercing gaze stayed locked on her, sharp as a blade, cutting through her words. She stammered, barely able to speak.
She forced herself to continue. “I realized you were burning up and knew right away–you must have been drugged. So I… I was willing to offer myself to you…. After all, this isn’t our first time. Mr. Ellison! I just wanted to save you! I swear I didn’t drug you–it has nothing to do with me! You should remember, I only showed up after you finished eating… Before that, I wasn’t even with you. How could I have done it? It must have been someone at that dinner party. Someone must’ve set this up, trying to push a woman onto you! Mr. Ellison, I was just trying to help. “Enough.” David interrupted, his voice cold.
Elizabeth sobbed. “I just wanted to help you. Is that so wrong? After everything I’ve done, you still treat me like this…. Mr. Ellison, does my devotion mean nothing to you? Do I mean nothing to you?”
She suddenly flipped the script, playing the victim–locking pitiful, eyes brimming with tears that spilled down her checks.
Her crying rang in David’s ears, nothing but noise.
By now, the pain had completely overridden the drug’s effects.
Blood was still flowing.
If he didn’t take care of the wound soon… he might lose too much blood.
But David had no intention of stopping the bleeding. He let it flow.
Pain. The more it hurt, the clearer his mind became.
“Mr. Ellison,” Elizabeth said softly. “Your wound is too deep. Let me at least bandage it to stop the bleeding.”
She reached toward himn.
“Stay where you are,” David ordered, stopping her in her tracks. “Don’t come any closer.”

“Get our.” His expression darkened. “And put your clothes on.”
Even with her bare body before him, he felt nothing. No interest. No desire.

She had thought her plan was foolproof.

David sat on the floor, leaning against the bed, his face unreadable.
Is it really worth it? I don’t even know….
“Even if it wasn’t you tonight, even if it were another woman, I still wouldn’t touch her.” He looked at her. “Do you understand?”
“What if it were Caroline?”
David froze for a second before raising an eyebrow slightly. “She’s my wife.”
Touching Caroline–was only natural. Why would he resist?
Elizabeth wanted to say more, but David pointed at the door, his patience already worn thin.
