David closed his eyes again. “It’s done. No point in regretting it now.”
Caroline immediately clarified, “We just slept. That’s all
“If you want to do something else, I’m more than happy to oblige.”
“I don’t!”

David let out a low chuckle. “Not sure who it was last night, burrowing into my arms. Or who kept draping their legs over me. And I definitely don’t know who-”
Before he could finish, Caroline shot out of bed and boted into the bathroom. Watching her retreating figure, David’s lips curled into a slow smirk.
It had been a long time since he’d had a proper night’s sleep. He was a light sleeper–any small noise would wake him. Lately, with everything going on, his nights had been filled with restless dreams.
But last night, with Caroline in his arms, he’d slept straight through till morning.
No dreams. Just peace.
A sharp knock sounded at the door.
“Mr. Ellison, William’s voice came from outside.
“Come in.”
William entered, carrying two sets of clothing–one a tailored men’s suit, the other a woman’s dress.
Behind him, a server pushed in a three–tiered cart filled with an elaborate breakfast spread.
“Mr. Ellison, William asked, “will you be heading straight to the office after breakfast?”
“No.” David reached out. “Keys”
“Yes, sir.”
William handed over the car keys and gestured for the server to hurry up. Just as he was preparing to leave, Caroline pecked her head out from the bathroom.
“I’m going to the office!”
“Madam
“I’m in a rush,” Caroline said anxiously. “William, wait for me! I just need two minutes to wash my face!”
William hesitated and glanced at David for instructions
David waved a hand. “beave.

But William, terrified she’d actually catch up, made a swift exit, closing the door behind him with practiced efficiency.

Caroline stomped her foot in frustration, then turned to glare at David. “If you’re not going to the office, where exactly are we going? Are we just supposed to stay in this hotel forever?”
“The hotel’s nice.” He leaned back lazily, sipping his coffee. ‘A little private getaway.”
Caroline went quiet. Like hell I want to spend a private getaway with him!
“Eat breakfast,” David said. “After last night you must be exhausted.”
He glanced pointedly at her arm.
Caroline got the message immediately.
And sure enough, her arm was even sorer today than it had been last night!
But she gritted her teeth and said, “Not exhausted. Just unlucky.”
As if getting back at him, Caroline deliberately picked at every dish on the table, making a complete mess
-spilling soup, mixing flavors, and generally making the entire spread look unappetizing.
David didn’t mind at all. He calmly sipped his coffee, letting her do as she pleased.
When she had finally eaten her fill, he spoke. “We’re going to the hospital after this.”
“The hospital?” Caroline’s spoon paused midair. “For what?”
She was immediately on high alert.
David answered smoothly, “A check–up.”
Oh.
Caroline suddenly remembered–Ellison Group was conducting company–wide health screenings. David had arranged for her to use the VIP service.
She let out a breath. Just a check–up. No reason not to get it done.
David personally drove her to the hospital and escorted her to the medical department.
Handing her over, he gave a simple instruction, “Take good care of her. Be thorough.”
The doctors and nurses nodded quickly. “Understood, Mr. Ellison.”
Caroline, however, had a feeling-
