Caroline couldn’t put her finger on it, but there was a nagging feeling in her chest.
Still, the medical examination itself seemed perfectly formal–just a little more thorough than a standard check–up.
Then again, she was using David’s VIP privileges. Rich cople valued their health, so it wasn’t surprising that the tests were more detailed.
Meanwhile, in the private lounge, David sat calmly, holding a test tube between his fingers.
“Mr. Ellison,” the chief doctor reported, “we successfully obtained the sample. We can extract the fetus’s DNA from this.”
David slowly rubbed his thumb over the glass, his expression dark and unreadable.
“How long will it take?”
“The fastest would be tonight, the latest by tomorrow.
David’s voice was indifferent. “Once you extract it, begin running comparisons against every DNA record. in the city’s database. Keep going until you find a match. Understood?”
The chief doctor nodded and said, “Understood. But the genetic database is extensive. The process will take some time. We ask for your patience, Mr. Ellison.
“Do it as quickly as possible.”
Once he found a match, he could track down the father of Caroline’s child.

For the rest of her life, Caroline would never know who the father of her child was.
Or–if, as Boris had suggested, the father turned out to have a genetic disorder or was some old man past his prime–David might allow Caroline to meet him.

David had never been a kind man. He was willing to do anything to get what he wanted.
And this time, he wanted Caroline. It had been a long, long time since he had needed something this badly.
The last time he’d felt this way was when he wanted control of the Ellison family.
And he had succeeded.

“This should be interesting. David murmured to himself, a confident glint in his eyes. “Turning your hatred into love… making you my wife, my lifelong partner, the mother of my children. But, Caroline, one thing is certain, you belong to me.”

An hour later, Caroline returned to the lounge.
David looked up. “You’re done?”
“Yeah.”
He hummed in acknowledgment, then got up and walked toward the exit.
Caroline followed behind him, her heart pounding. A strange sense of unease wouldn’t leave her.
As she stared at his back, she finally couldn’t hold back her suspicion. “You really took time out of your day to accompany me to a check–up? No ulterior motive at all?”
David didn’t even turn his head. “Do I need a motive?”
“I don’t know. But I do know you wouldn’t be this nice for no reason.”
Something about this felt like a con artist offering a very suspicious deal.
Suddenly, David stopped walking. Caught off guard, Caroline walked straight into him.
Her nose slammed into his firm back, and she winced, scrunching up her entire face in pain. “Hey could you warn me next time?”
Thank god her face was natural–if she’d had plastic surgery, her implants would’ve been knocked out of place!
David turned to face her, his gaze dark and unreadable. “You’re not used to me treating you well?”
“Definitely not.”
