Caroline replied, “Well, you have been treating me badly all this time.”
“That was then,” David said, his tone carrying a deeper meaning. “Things are different now.”

Instinctively, she took a step back. To be honest, this version of David is hard to read.
When he was furious, when he was violent, even when he was downright cruel–she knew how to handle it. In her mind, she had always categorized him as a devil.
But now, the devil was suddenly trying to be an angel.
She couldn’t process it.
“Are you trying to set me up?” Caroline asked. “David, once read about the most devastating way to punish someone. Do you know what it is?”
“Enlighten me.”
“The deepest, cruelest punishment isn’t immediate torment or endless suffering. It’s giving someone the most extreme kindness–so much love, so much devotion that they believe they’re the happiest person in the world. And then… just when they’ve fully fallen, when they think they have everything- Caroline’s. voice remained clear and unwavering. that’s when you kick them into hell.”
Her eyes held no doubt, no hesitation.
“The worst pain,” she continued, “comes from the person you love the most. The kind of wound that never heals, one that bleeds forever. The greatest love and the deepest agony–both delivered by the same person. David… is that what you’re planning for me?”
David raised an eyebrow. “That is a clever method. But no. That’s not my plan. You guessed wrong. Caroline.”
“Wrong?”
“I want to treat you well–so well that you can never leave me. And then, we’ll spend the rest of our lives together,” David said casually. “I don’t have the time or patience to play those ridiculous mind games you just described.”
Caroline blinked, staring at him, unsure whether to believe him or not.
Boris had told her that David loved her.
David himself had said he loved her.
Harper had insisted on it from the very beginning.

He lifted a hand to touch her check, a subtle smile playing on his lips.
“David, how about… Caroline swallowed. “You just end things for me now?”
But David only smiled, brushing his thumb across her lips before turning to leave.
By the time they arrived at Ellison Group, it was nearly noon,
The summer sun was blazing, so bright it was almost blinding.
David stepped out of the car first.
“Mr. Ellison.” The driver quickly opened an umbrella, shielding him from the harsh sunlight.

The last thing she wanted was for her colleagues to see her arriving with him.
Just as David was about to pull her out of the car himself, a figure suddenly rushed over.
“Mr. Ellison!”
His expression darkened instantly..
“Mr. Ellison, I’ve been waiting for you for so long. I finally got to see you. Elizabeth’s voice was laced with grievance. “I can’t get into the Ellison residence anymore, you won’t answer my calls, and you won’t even reply to my messages…”
