Caroline let out a laugh. “You’re my husband, yet you’re going to visit my sister, who just happens to be pregnant with your child. Do you even hear how ridiculous that sounds?”
She stepped forward, standing right in front of David. Truthfully, I have no right to stop you from seeing Elizabeth, especially now that she’s carrying your baby But David, you were the one who came to me first.”
Caroline lifted her chin slightly, her voice steady and deliberate, every word a clear
raccusation.
“From the very start, you favored Elizabeth. You indulged her, spoiled her, and stood by her side, and I saw, it all. I never said a word because you chose her. You loved her. She was your precious darling, and in your eyes, I was nothing more than an ant beneath your feet, I endured the humiliation, the torment, the cruelty. I accepted it. I knew my place. I fought desperately to break free, to escape that life. But then, David, what did you do? You started drawing closer. You told me you were serious about me. You said you wanted to build a life with me. You swore you would clear away every obstacle between us, that you would bridge the gap. You were the one who gave me hope. And now, you’re taking it all back.”
Caroline’s voice turned sharp, laced with accusation. If you had always treated me the same way, if you had stayed cold and indifferent from beginning to end, do you think I would try to stop you from seeing Elizabeth? I would’ve happily wished you two a long and blissful life together! David, what does love even mean to you? Is it just a whim? A passing fancy? A game to amuse yourself?”
As the final word left her lips, Caroline’s eyes burned red.
She fought hard to keep the tears from falling.
Why am I even sad? Why does this hurt so much? I never believed David would truly love me from the start. So why does it feel like my heart is being torn apart now that I see through his lies?
Caroline realized she had always been starving for love
Even the smallest kindness, the slightest warmth, was enough to make her yearn.
In her entire life, no one had ever chosen her, not once not unwaveringly.
That was why, deep down, she had always longed for it
To be loved.

Caroline let out a bitter laugh, her reddened eyes making her look like a wounded rabbit.
Seeing her like this, desperately holding back her tears made David’s chest tighten.
He reached up, wanting to brush away the dampness beneath her eyes, but before he could touch her, Caroline stepped back, again and again, until there was clear distance between them.
“Leave,” she said softly, her voice now devoid of all there from moments ago.
