“Enough!”
His voice was so harsh that Elizabeth trembled and fell silent.
Caroline hadn’t caught the full sentence. “Depends on my what? What are you trying to say?”
“Nothing.” David cast her a cold glance. “You can get lost now.”
He didn’t want her to know that he had actually given her the final say over Elizabeth’s child.
But she had already relinquished that right.
She had chosen to let Elizabeth keep the baby. Fine. That was enough. Nothing else mattered.
David had no intention of laying his heart bare before Caroline again, only for her to trample all over it.
She didn’t deserve his sincerity. She didn’t deserve his love.
She was born to be worthless.
“I told you to get lost,” David said. “Are you deaf?”
For a moment, Caroline felt like she had traveled back in time to the beginning of their marriage.
Back then, David had spoken to her the same way–with the same arrogant, condescending tone, looking down on her as if she were nothing more than an insect.
How fitting. After all this time, we’ve come full circle. She thought.
Soon, David would tire of her again. Then, he would turn his attention to Elizabeth, cherishing and protecting her because of the baby.
“I’m leaving now,” Caroline said. “Wishing you and Elizabeth many children and grandchildren.”
David’s posture wavered ever so slightly–so subtle that it was almost imperceptible.
Because her words were exactly what he had expected.
Not a single word was different.
So this was it. She had truly given him her blessing. She had never intended to spend her life with him. That had always been his own foolish fantasy.
Without looking back, Caroline turned and walked out, slamming the door behind her with a loud bang.
She was probably the only person who dared to slam a door in David’s face.
