David glanced at the glass of red wine, his brow arching slightly before he let out a quiet chuckle. “Fine.”
That single word landed on Caroline’s heart, sending tremors through her.
His ways of humiliating her grew crueler each time.
She should have been used to it by now. Yet, each time, the pain cut deeper, the sorrow weighed heavier.
David lifted the delicate stemmed glass, his long fingers tightening around it as he strode toward Caroline, one deliberate step at a time.
Elizabeth followed closely, phone raised, recording every moment.
Her face brimmed with glee, anticipating the spectacle about to unfold.
The entire room watched. After tonight, Caroline would never be able to hold her head high among her colleagues again.
Under the bright lights, she stood straight, her makeup still pristine, her lashes curled, her lips a deep
crimson.
But her face was pale.
“I’m giving you one last chance, David said. “Apologize or get drenched.”

She countered, “Was there ever anything between us? If there was no bond to begin with, where would the sentiment come from?”
A mocking laugh slipped from David’s lips, “Impressive. Your tongue is as sharp as ever.”
With just one sentence, she had dismissed everything between them.
No bond. No sentiment.
His gaze darkened. “Your tricks are far sharper than my words.”
Caroline lowered her eyes, no longer looking at him. “Go ahead.”
She simply stood there, unmoving.
David’s grip on the glass tightened, his knuckles whitening.
She had always been this stubborn.

A small movement of his hand, and the wine began to drip.
He didn’t dump it all at once.
Instead, he let it fall, slowly, deliberately, one drop at a time.
Caroline felt the coolness seep into her scalp.
The wine trickled down, sliding over her forehead, past her ears, down her skin.
The crimson liquid contrasted against her pale complexion, creating a haunting sight.
Her eyes stung. She simply closed them.
The wine kept falling.
Time stretched unbearably slow.
Such a small glass was taking an agonizingly long time to empty.
